A messy little book stack of recent reads... thought I’d have a go at some micro reviews 🤓📚

[#AD - books marked with an asterisk (*) were gifted, with no obligation to post. Here's a Waterstones affiliate link for your own book browsing adventures: https://buff.ly/2GO0QPr]

Black Beauty by Anna Sewell*, Wordsworth Editions: read this for the first time and can confirm it’s not my favourite children’s classic ever. I was far more interested in the life of the author than the story itself, and reading more about that made me look at the book in a whole new light, but I’m saving that topic for an upcoming blog post...

Urban Creatures by Sarah Gray*, Claret Press: a gorgeously quirky collection of short stories that’ll leave you wanting more. Very easy to read whilst still being all kinds of diverse. Disturbing subject matter, but in the best kind of way.

Blood Moon by Lucy Cuthew*, Walker Books: such an important and timely read focussing on period shaming and online trolling culture in teenagers. Told in prose, difficult to put down, accidentally read the whole thing in 48 hours and I regret nothing.

Little Men and Jo’s Boys by Louisa May Alcott, VMC: I was so surprised by how little I enjoyed Little Men given how much I adore the first two books, but thankfully Jo’s Boy’s slowly turned it back around. Charming, years ahead of its time and *such* a cool example of Alcott breaking the fourth wall and sharing her own thoughts with the reader... through Jo, but undeniably her own lived experiences addressed directly to her readers during this final book. Hit me right in the feels when I read it!

Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker, Penguin Books: basically confirmed all my worst fears about what chronic sleep deprivation is doing to my long-term health, love that for me. Quite a dense, research-heavy read but some helpful tips and such an interesting subject matter make it *mostly* worthwhile I reckon...

What are you reading at the moment? Any recommendations? 🥰📚

Title: Oracle
Author: Julie Anderson
Publisher: Claret Press
Release date: May 5, 2021
Rating: 5/5

"Oracle" was everything I hoped for and more - excellent characters, perfect setting, brilliant writing. It was so, so good to catch up with Cassie (the main character from "Plague") - and what a situation she finds herself in this time! This is a really fast read, and I was disappointed to come to the end. I can't wait for book 3 (please don't let it be the last!!).

My thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley. This review was written voluntarily and is entirely my own, unbiased, opinion.

How can we work to make London carbon neutral?

Is it possible to have an entirely carbon neutral city?

What impact will making London carbon neutral have if the rest of the world isn't working to achieve the same goal?

If the batteries for electric vehicles are being produced in factories across the world, are they really helping us to reduce global emissions?

Join TOMORROW- Wednesday March 24th- at the slightly later time of 19:30 GMT for our FREE online event!

Last week, the government announced that the nurses who have gone above and beyond for so many of us this past year, are receiving a measly 1% pay rise. This comes just a few short weeks after the Secretary of State for Health & Social Care faced scrutiny for the half a billion pounds worth of contracts that went to those personally connected with those from the government.

How can we resolve the Care Crisis? Is it an issue of austerity and crony capitalism? A lack of financial backing? Or do we need to drastically re-design the system to fit the needs for the twenty-first century?

Join us THIS THURSDAY- March 11th- for our FREE online event at 19:00 GMT, as we talk to Dr Emma Dowling, Mark Bergfeld & Sarah Gray, and with the help of our three guests, grapple with the big issues that affect us all.
