The answer might be less than you think.

Many people assume they need millions in the bank before they can retire comfortably, but retirement isn't just about the size of your portfolio, it's about your lifestyle, spending habits, income needs, and long-term financial plan.

For some, financial freedom means luxury travel and a large investment portfolio. For others, it means having enough passive income to cover their monthly expenses and the freedom to spend their time how they choose.

The key is understanding your number, not someone else's.

It’s not for everyone, but if markets continue to perform over the long term as they have historically, I believe I’ll be far better off investing my spare cash rather than overpaying my mortgage.

That doesn’t mean overpaying a mortgage is the wrong decision far from it. For many people, the peace of mind that comes with being debt-free is worth more than the potential for higher returns elsewhere. It all comes down to your goals, risk tolerance, and what helps you sleep best at night.

So SpaceX would need to deliver a 100x return from your IPO purchase price.

1,000,000=10,000×100

For perspective, a 100x return is extremely rare for a company that's already valued in the hundreds of billions. If SpaceX were valued at roughly £250 billion at IPO, a 100x increase would imply a valuation around £25 trillion, which would be larger than any company in history.

A more realistic route to £1 million from a £10,000 investment would usually involve:

A much smaller company achieving a 100x return, or Additional investments over time, or Compounding over decades.

In 90 seconds let’s go over how I would invest £10k given what I’ve learned about investing in the last number of years.

This isn't about chasing the next hot stock, timing the market, or getting rich overnight. It's about building wealth in a way that's simple, sustainable, and repeatable.

I'll break down exactly where I'd allocate the money, how I'd think about risk, and the lessons I'd apply if I were starting with £10k today.

SpaceX IPO today. What's your thoughts? 🚀

It is undoubtedly be one of the most anticipated public offerings in market history.

SpaceX has transformed the aerospace industry, built a dominant launch business, and created massive excitement around projects like Starlink. The growth story is compelling, but as with any IPO, the key question isn't whether it's a great company, it's whether it's a great investment at the valuation being offered.

History has shown that even exceptional businesses can be poor investments if investors overpay, while patience can sometimes create better opportunities after the initial hype fades.

Are you buying on day one, waiting for the dust to settle, or avoiding it altogether?

People often compare their own portfolios to Warren Buffett's and attempt to follow the Buffett investing model without considering one critical factor: they don't have the same financial structure, resources, or access to capital that Buffett does.

Through Warren Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway, he manages one of the largest pools of capital in the world, giving him opportunities, flexibility, and leverage that most retail investors simply don't have access to.

While there is a lot to learn from Buffett's principles such as patience, discipline, and investing in quality businesses, it's important to remember that his portfolio is built around circumstances that are unique to his position. What works for a multi-billion-dollar investment vehicle may not always be the most suitable strategy for an individual investor.

My plan is to retire at 50, I don't want to wait till 67 the planned state resignation.

I know the number and I've done it multiple times over over.

I completely understand the psychological barrier to doing it, it can feel uncomfortable moving cash into the market, especially when there's so much uncertainty and negative news around.

Personally, I take the view that, over my lifetime, global markets will continue to grow and create value, despite the inevitable ups and downs along the way.

That's what gives me the confidence to stay invested and focus on the long term rather than trying to predict short-term movements.

I started my career back in 2006, and I still remember the excitement of being offered my first role.

When it came to discussing salary, I asked for £12,000 a year, thinking that was a reasonable figure and hoping I wasn't aiming too high.

A few days later, they came back with an offer.

To my surprise, they didn't offer the £12,000 I had asked for, they offered £16,800 instead.

I genuinely couldn't believe my luck.
At that stage of my life and career, that difference felt enormous.

Looking back now, it's a reminder of how different things were at the start of a career.

Sometimes we underestimate our value, and it's only later that we realise what employers are prepared to pay for the right person.
