Lots of fun tonight - 40th birthday prestige Champagne tasting in Gerrards X. Fave all round was Perrier-Jouet Belle Époque 2004. Thanks Fara Carty for being a fab chief pourer!

Below are a few highlights from dinner last night. Two beautiful but very different reds. The Barbaresco was fantastic with venison with red wine & red currant sauce & the Rioja was silky smooth with lots of fruit considering its a 95. Very complex & long length. The Oloroso Dulce was outstanding. Not overly sweet, but rich & nutty. A bargain too at £16.99 for something 30 years old.

Can't rave about this wine enough. Concentrated fleshy bramble & black plum fruit flavours with lovely sweet spices- vanilla, clove, cinnamon; fresh to***co, liquorice, cocoa. Silky tannins & a long length. Pure class, as are all La Rioja Alta wines. From Waitrose £19.99.
