A new exhibition titled House of Bo***ge: Vintage Prints from the Ernest Cole Family Trust opens today at Magnum Gallery in Paris 📸

On view until March 29, the exhibition traces Cole’s journey from his birthplace of South Africa to his exile in New York through a collection of rare and vintage prints. Showcased are works from his landmark series House of Bo***ge, a document of the horrors of the Apartheid regime, alongside prints from The True America, a portrayal of the streets of 1960s and ‘70s New York through his lens.

"Lost to the family for many years, [the prints] offer a new insight into Ernest’s seminal practice as South Africa’s premier anti-Apartheid photographer,” says Leslie Matlaisane from the Ernest Cole Family Trust. “We hope that their inclusion in these shows will provide a new understanding of his work and legacy."

The feature film A Complete Unknown, a biopic about Bob Dylan directed by James Mangold, is released in UK theaters tomorrow, following its US release on Christmas Day in 2024.

Dylan's rise to fame was documented by Magnum photographers throughout the 1960s. In 1965, W. Eugene Smith photographed the musician in the studio wielding an electric guitar, a change that generated considerable controversy in the folk music community.

Towards the end of the decade, Elliott Landy made a series of portraits of Dylan at his home at the Byrdcliffe Arts Colony in Woodstock, New York, undertaking experiments with infrared film. One of these images would later be used for the cover of Dylan's 1969 album, Nashville Skyline.

Peter Marlow's touring exhibition, The English Cathedral, featuring Marlow's photographs of all 42 Church of England cathedrals, is now on view at Chelmsford Cathedral until February 13 ⛪

In 2008, Marlow was commissioned by Royal Mail to mark the 300th anniversary of St Paul’s Cathedral by photographing six Anglican cathedrals. This project inspired him to expand his work, ultimately capturing the naves of all 42 cathedrals. This result is an ethereal collection of images, comparing and contrasting their architectural nuances in the light of dawn.

Chelmsford is the 24th cathedral to host the exhibition, as part of the foundation’s vision to showcase it in all 42 cathedrals.

For a Desperate Few, a Hectic Escape From Gaza 10/01/2025

On assignment for The New York Times in 2024, Paolo Pellegrin and journalist Nicholas Casey share the stories of Palestinian medical evacuees leaving Gaza for treatment at facilities operated by the UAE in Abu Dhabi and Al-Arish, Egypt.

“The war in Gaza is a conflict with little chance of escape — even for the thousands of Palestinians who have been grievously wounded in Israel’s attacks,” writes Casey. “But a small number of the sick and injured make it onto a list of critical cases to be treated by doctors abroad.”

The article retraces the arduous journey out of Gaza and the lives of evacuees at the Emirates Humanitarian City — a purpose-built housing complex to shelter evacuees from crisis zones around the world.

For a Desperate Few, a Hectic Escape From Gaza The war is nearly impossible to flee — except for a small number of sick and wounded who are offered a dramatic path to safety.

French far-right politician Jean-Marie Le Pen passed away on January 7 at the age of 96. A controversial figure in modern French politics, infamous for his racist, antisemitic and homophobic rhetoric, Le Pen founded France’s modern political far-right and served as President of the National Front from its founding in 1972 until 2011, when he was succeeded by his daughter, Marine Le Pen.

Le Pen’s political career was documented by Magnum photographers for over four decades. Jean Gaumy photographed Le Pen during his first presidential campaign in 1974, when he secured only 0.75% of the vote. In 2002, during Le Pen’s fourth run for the presidency, Martine Franck and Patrick Zachmann documented a series of widespread protests against him in the streets of Paris.

Today we remember Constantine Manos (1934–2025), an exceptional photographer, documentarian and long-term Magnum member who devoted himself to a "lifelong search for beautiful and poetic images.”

Manos began his career as a staff photographer for the Stars & Stripes while stationed in Germany in the U.S. military. Born to Greek parents in South Carolina, he pursued a three-year documentary project in his familial home, culminating in his book A Greek Portfolio in 1972.

After joining Magnum in 1963, he began a survey of color in the United States, ranging from California beach dwellers, to beer-drinking bikers at Daytona Beach, to Mardi Gras and Gay Pride festivals. Composing his photographs with patience and serenity, he always sought to capture the magic of life as it is lived: “I am a people photographer and have always been interested in people."

"I feel we have lost not just a remarkable artist but also a fundamental part of what makes our collective unique,” writes Magnum President Cristina de Middel. "Costa’s unwavering dedication to photography and to Magnum’s mission will remain an enduring example for us all."

In 1976, a serendipitous encounter with a man dressed as Santa Claus in her New York neighborhood led Susan Meiselas to spend two years documenting the 'Volunteers of America,' a nonprofit organization that recruited homeless men to dress as Santa Claus, in order to raise funds for local shelters and those in need.

From the jolly, bustling atmosphere of Fifth Avenue to moments of reflection behind the scenes, Meiselas’ images capture the humanity of the volunteers and their efforts. By wearing Santa costumes, these men momentarily bridge the divide that often isolates them from society, serving as an evocative commentary on acceptance and belonging.
