THE PARETO PRINCIPLE ⠀
⠀
80% or the results come from 20% of the work. ⠀
⠀
How does this apply to coding?⠀
⠀
20% of the coding principles will allow you to produce 80% of the results you want. ⠀
⠀
What does this mean?⠀
⠀
If you focus on the base 20% of programming such as variables, if statements, for loops, oop, dry etc. then you can do 80% of things that you want when coding. ⠀
⠀
Don’t get distracted by that new framework or the new language. Focus on the basics and sky rocket your coding productivity. ⠀

TEST TEST TEST 🔁⠀
⠀
“More than the act of testing, the act of designing tests is one of the best bug preventers known. The thinking that must be done to create a useful test can discover and eliminate bugs before they are coded – indeed, test-design thinking can discover and eliminate bugs at every stage in the creation of software, from conception to specification, to design, coding and the rest.” – Boris Beizer⠀
⠀
Having good tests in place is more than just a process of checking functionality that is required. ⠀
⠀
Tests can also act as a form of documentation for fellow developers. ✅⠀
⠀
They show how to use code, and how it can behave under specific conditions. ⠀
⠀
Simplicity is key. You don’t want to get lost in your own code. If you can’t follow it easily how do you expect someone else too.⠀
⠀
You can help code substantially by creating simple tests that follow good design patterns. 👨💻⠀
⠀
Dont be scared to show someone else your code. Peer code reviews will help eliminate possible bugs in your code and tests that you might have not picked up but someone else could. ⠀
⠀
Happy coding guys 🙂 ⠀

DREAM BIG 💪⠀
⠀
Denzel Washington once said “Dreams without goals, are just dreams and they ultimately fuel disappointment.”⠀
⠀
I spent some time last week thinking about what I want to do with my future. Where I wanted to be as a developer. ⠀
⠀
I realised that I’m not exactly where I want to be. ⠀
⠀
I’m taking the easy road. Making excuses for why I didn’t do specific tasks on my list. Just cruising by. ⠀
⠀
I came to realise its because I wasn’t pushing myself enough. I didn’t have a big enough goal that would mean I would push myself so much harder to get any where near close enough to it. ⠀
⠀
✅ My goal now is to become the best c # developer in the company I work at and then become go to person online for c # tips and tricks. ⠀
⠀
This is my accountability post. I’m hoping that by posting this I can keep myself on target and push myself to really become a better software developer. ⠀
⠀
Go big or go home right? 👍⠀
⠀
I’d be interested to know if any of you felt the same way. And what did you do that helped you? Let me know in the comments below 🙂. ⠀

CREATE HABITS! ✅⠀
⠀
Kent Beck once said “I’m not a great programmer; I’m a good programmer with great habits.”⠀
⠀
There is so much to learn when programming and technology is constantly changing and evolving. ⠀
⠀
It’s hard to keep up. ⠀
⠀
Creating successful programming habits will turn you from an average programmer to a great one. ⠀
⠀
Do you follow a specific process when developing? Or do you dive right in and see how it goes?⠀
⠀
Have a habit to plan out what you need your software to do in order to accomplish the task. ⠀
⠀
Take it step by step. ⠀
⠀
For me that had such a profound affect on the amount of time I actually spent coding and the quality of the code I wrote. ⠀
⠀
Focus on one thing. ⠀
⠀
Another important habit I have started developing is refactoring my code once I’m done. ⠀
⠀
When initially going through coding a part of a project, it’s often that we might add comments or comment out a piece of code that we might come back to later. ⠀
⠀
I found that if I keep my code clean then when I return to it weeks or months later it makes a lot more sense. ⠀
⠀
And finally, never stop learning. ⠀
⠀
As I mentioned earlier, we are in an industry that evolves very rapidly. We need to have a passion for learning and getting better. ⠀
⠀
If you are not learning, you’re falling behind. ⠀
⠀
It will help you in your personal development and professional development. ⠀
⠀
Do you agree? What are the habits you have that help you as a programmer? ⠀

Imposter! 👽⠀
⠀
‘I think the most creative people veer between ambition and anxiety, self-doubt and confidence. I definitely can relate to that. We all go through that: “Am I doing the right thing?” “Is this what I’m meant to be doing?”‘ - Daniel Radcliffe⠀
⠀
Are you afraid that you’ll be exposed, that you don’t know enough, that you don’t deserve this position or this career? Are you scared to ask for help from other developers in case that makes you look ignorant? ⠀
⠀
As developers we can put so much pressure on ourselves, long hours and never take days off. Collecting certificates so for fear of not being qualified enough for the role.👀⠀
⠀
Do you have this feeling despite many accomplishments in your software development career? ⠀
⠀
It doesn’t have to be that way. 😌⠀
⠀
Here are a few tricks to help you get over the dreaded Imposter Syndrome: ⠀
⠀
✨Do it even if you’re scared - Fake it till you make it⠀
✨Learn to become better, improve for your own knowledge not for others⠀
✨Focus on creating, on the task at hand⠀
✨If you don’t know, ask.⠀
✨Track your progress and accomplishments. ⠀
⠀
We all have imposter syndrome from time to time, but you can rid yourself of it. 💪⠀

JUST CODE IT! 👨💻⠀
⠀
Guy Kawasaki once said “The hardest thing about getting started is getting started.” ⠀
⠀
Don’t be afraid to get started. ⠀
⠀
You might have the best app ideas, you might know the best way to solve a problem. But if you are too scared to start, to make mistakes, to learn, it will never become a reality. ⠀
⠀
We all have those thoughts of “maybe if I learn this one more language or framework then I’ll be successful.” ⠀
⠀
But how many frameworks or languages have you learnt? Have you used any of them to get your product or solution off the ground? ⠀
⠀
If you said no, JUST CODE IT! ⠀
⠀
Are you going to code it? Let me know in the comments below. ⠀

What makes you happy? 🙂⠀
⠀
The little things make a difference. ⠀
⠀
“When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down 'happy'. They told me I didn't understand the assignment, and I told them they didn't understand life." - John Lennon ⠀
⠀
As a programmer there is a going to be a lot of days where you are frustrated. 😣⠀
⠀
That missing semicolon that took you hours find. 👀⠀
That misspelt variable that’s causing you to pull your hair out 👀⠀
That bit of old code that just doesn’t make sense 👀⠀
⠀
We have those days. It’s expected. ⠀
⠀
Which is why it’s important to also make sure you wind down. ⠀
⠀
Relax. Take a breath. Pause. ⠀
⠀
It helps to step away from the issue for a bit and come back to it with a fresh and clear mind. ⠀
⠀
Maybe a nice cup of coffee will help? ⠀
⠀
Or a stroll in the fresh air. 🚶♀️⠀
⠀
Take care of your mind and body. Especially in the lockdown situation we find ourselves in. It’s important to take care of your mental and physical health too. ⠀

Do you even care?! 👀⠀
⠀
Steve Jobs once said “If you are working on something you really care about, you don’t have to be pushed. This vision pulls you.” ⠀
⠀
Do you care about what you’re working on? Do you care about what your building or programming? Do you care about what you’re learning? ⠀
⠀
Wouldn’t it be easier if you did? 👍⠀
⠀
Imagine waking up and being excited to work on that project or learn that next chapter in your programming book. ⠀
⠀
It’s not always easy to find what you love. But if you care about something, let’s say becoming the best developer in your area, you have a target to work towards. Something to aim at. ⠀
⠀
Working on a project for a client? Care about how you are coming across as a brand. Are you giving it your all in the hopes that this will be return customer? ⠀
⠀
Passion leads to focus and drive which leads to success. 🎉⠀
⠀
This will help you build the habits of success. ⠀

HOW PROGRAMMING AFFECTS YOUR BRAIN 🧠⠀
⠀
“The tools we use have a profound (and devious) influence on our thinking habits, and, therefore, on our thinking abilities.” - Edsger Dijkstra⠀
⠀
It’s never too late to learn coding. 👍⠀
⠀
Studies have found that programmers have developed higher average cognitive skills. ⠀
⠀
These studies also showed that intellectually stimulating activities such as coding dramatically reduces the chances of degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. ⠀
⠀
Does that mean you won’t develop Alzheimers as a programmer? 🧐⠀
⠀
Not necessarily, but it will certainly help.⠀
⠀
Let’s dig into the science a bit. ⠀
⠀
Why would activities such as programming help?⠀
⠀
Programming is mental demanding task. It improves brain health and prevents neural degeneration. (As well as being fun!) 🤓⠀
⠀
Programming uses parts of the brain associated with language processing, memory, attention, creativity and logic. ⠀
⠀
✨ Programming is much more than maths and logic as many would believe. ✨⠀

👍 WHY CODING IS USEFUL⠀
⠀
——⠀
Computers have no free will. ⠀
⠀
Programmers provide instructions to these machines and tell them what to do. 👨💻⠀
⠀
In today’s world it would be very difficult to think of tasks that do not rely on a programmed machine or software.⠀
⠀
That’s why programming is important. ⠀
⠀
It is vital in many aspects of our lives. ⠀
The COVID restrictions has only made that more apparent. 😷 ⠀
⠀
More than ever it is essential that we are able to carry out our daily asks online. Get our businesses online. Communications and interactions with our colleagues and family. Even just watching our favourite streaming service. 📺⠀
⠀
If you are second guessing whether to start a career as programmer, don’t.⠀
⠀
✨ Just take the leap, you won’t regret it. ✨⠀
