Something strange.....I have just been comparing the canned icc profiles of the Epson SC-P900 and the much older Pro4000 (20 years) Looks like my old 4000 was a better beast than the latest technology. The faded representation is the Pro4000. The D Max is far better in the 4000. The better D Max is what we are all chasing, and it should be getting better not worse.

Firstly, welcome to the new people who have joined the group. I hope you find time here benefitial and a good space to discuss colour and the use of LAB. Before starting in LAB you need to set up your desk space. I have also made up my own quick key command for quickly converting from RGB to LAB which I suggest you do the same because once you start to see the power and simplicity of using LAB you will be converting all your images to LAB to colour correct. So here is the very first part of the lesson that I run for my courses. It makes no perceptual difference to do these steps and at first they seem counter intuitive but they are how LAB practitioners work so to keep us all on the 'same page' I strongly suggest you set up as follows. Over time this slightly 'upside down' approach will make complete sense and become second nature. So lets dive in.....oh also, make sure your Rendering Intent (Edit, Colour Settings int he drop down menu) is set to Relative Colourmetric...unless you have a specific reason for using Perceptual (which is a whole other discussion).

When working in LAB we keep one eye on the colours on the screen and the other on the numbers. Unlike RGB we can place our colours exactly where we need them to be. Here is something to help make sense of the numbers involved with LAB. Taken from notes for the Practical LAB Module 1 courses. https://robhackman.com/LAB-TUTORIALS/Introduction/1

With over 15 years of experience using LAB as a colour space to undertake all of my colour correction and post production, I have formulated a simple method of harnessing and utilising the most powerful colour space, LAB.

During these years I have developed my own techniques that have enabled an approach to my post production in a practical and easy to understand manner. After completing this course LAB Module 1 you will be empowered with knowledge and techniques that will give you control over your pre-visualisation.

LAB is without doubt the most powerful colour space available and thus considered difficult to use. Because of this many myths arise to its use and almost every photographer avoids using it as it is deemed too difficult to understand, until now. I will put in your hands the power of LAB in a simple and practical manner, one that you will without doubt use for the rest of your working years.
