Tip 9 for making your change a success: ensure the programme stays forward looking. “All we ever talk about is what has already happened. What’s the point?”

This is a phrase we often hear. Generally, company reporting is backwards looking. While it’s important to learn from what has happened to date, and to allow that to inform your decisions – your change programme should be focused on looking forward.

Keep a laser-like focus on the next steps and what the future looks like to keep your change on track, adapt in an agile way through the process, ensure motivation levels remain high and to move towards completion.

Tip 8 for making your change a success: ensure the programme control process is dynamic and able to change with the progress.

Change isn’t linear. Your programme control process needs to be dynamic and agile – with the ability to adapt as you make progress through your change project.

This enables you to keep a clear, live view of where the project is, what you’ve achieved to date, where you need to go next and the steps you need to take to get there, so as not to protract the programme.

Tip 7 for making your change a success: don't overload people.

With ambition, excitement and motivation levels high when creating change plans, it can be easy to overestimate how much is feasible for individuals to take on.

Change needs to be sustainable, and goals realistic and achievable. Overloading people causes multiple issues:

• Increased resistance to change

• If individuals are overwhelmed with what they see as a mountain of additional new tasks, they are more likely to view the change as a separate entity - rather than part of day-to-day business. They’ll tend to then prioritise their current day-to-day tasks.

• Motivation levels drop when people feel they are constantly overwhelmed and not achieving.

The answer: don’t overload people.

Set realistic workloads and break the project down into achievable parts to keep motivation high and make your change sustainable.

* TIP 6 FOR MAKING YOUR CHANGE A SUCCESS: RECOGNISE THE RESOURCES NEEDED TO ACHIEVE THE OBJECTIVES *

Make sure you have the right tools for the job in hand. This involves a healthy dose of reality at the start to ensure success down the line.

Carefully consider each objective and which resources you need to achieve it. Do you need new computer systems to achieve objectives for your digital transformation? Perhaps you need more internal capabilities or personnel capacity to see the change through successfully within a tight timescale?

Your resource planning should take into account the resources you need to kick off the change journey, those you need to manage the process of change to reach your objectives (such as change management software), and those you need for the objective to be met in the short term and fully integrated and operational in the long term (such as additional highly trained staff, upgraded computer systems). Make sure you have enough budget to meet these requirements.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR CHANGE A SUCCESS - TIP 5:
* UNDERSTAND HOW LEADERS WILL INVOLVE & ENGAGE PEOPLE AT ALL LEVELS *

It’s no good trying to successfully integrate change without understanding how leaders within the business will engage teams and involve them in the process. Change leaders need to be visible and to have a plan for everyone’s involvement and engagement that they are responsible and accountable for.

To overcome resistance to change, and to make change stick, you need everyone on board. It can’t be done in isolation.

At all levels of the business, people need to engage with the change and feel they are involved in the process. Make sure you understand how leaders will make this happen. You need senior stakeholders to be fully on board with the change, but it’s equally important for those at different levels to be engaged with it. The best way to do this is clear communication of the plan and the value, and to get people involved in the process.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR CHANGE A SUCCESS: TIP 4
* BE CLEAR ON THE VALUE PROPOSITION *

When planning your change project, and communicating it to the team at all levels, you need to be clear about the value proposition. Broken down into steps, make sure you lay out:

1. The problem being faced and why the change is needed
2. How the change will solve the problem
3. Why this change solution is valuable, what the benefits are

It’s key for everyone involved to see a clear link between the problem, the solution and the value for adoption of change to be successful. It also helps you ensure your solution is directly addressing and solving the issue, and providing the maximum value possible.

How to make your change a success | 23 tips for 2023

* TIP 3: BE CLEAR ON WHAT THE CHANGE WILL ACHIEVE *

In order to measure success, and to get your team on board and committed to the change process, you need to be clear about exactly what will be achieved from the changes being put in place.

There can be a tendency to see change projects as another job that’s a distraction from, or an add on to, the day job. Keeping the bigger picture in mind and understanding exactly what you are working towards helps everyone see why the change is being put into place.

Keeping the end game in mind helps with motivation, understanding, and resistance to change, and enables the business to set clear goals and KPIs throughout the change journey.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR CHANGE A SUCCESS | TOP 23 TIPS FOR 2023

Tip 2: Make change a part of everyday business

People tend to view change as an add-on to their everyday business. It’s often seen as a project that’s managed in isolation – entirely separately from day-to-day tasks and business goals.

To make your change a lasting success, make sure your integration plan focuses on the change being ingrained in everything you do on a day-to-day basis. Not as an extra that can all too easily be sidelined.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR CHANGE A SUCCESS | TOP 23 TIPS FOR 2023

Happy New Year! We’re all back to work, new year’s resolutions abound, and businesses are getting cracking on their exciting Q1 changes with a spring in their step. With that in mind, we wanted to kick off the new year with our top tips to make sure your change plans are a success. In the spirit of 2023, we’ll be sharing 23 tips over the next few weeks - starting with tip 1 today.

Let’s get started!

Tip 1: Communication.

Communication is a key component of your change management plan and can often be overlooked or underestimated. In order to get your team on board with your plans, to successfully overcome resistance to change, and to ensure lasting and successful adoption of the new status quo, you need to have a strong communications plan in place. Ensure your messaging about the change, and delivery of this message, are clear and consistent. This communication should start early on in the change process and continue consistently throughout, until you’re sure the changes have been successfully integrated into the business as a whole.
