The Three Buddhas

I need to talk about what this piece actually means.
This is a Donald Stannard necklace from the 1970s–1980s. Signed. Double-sided. And the more you look, the more it reveals.

The front — an imperial dragon, engraved in gold. Power. Protection. The guardian of all that is precious.
The back — an inscription in Eastern script that we are still working to translate. Ancient characters that someone chose to place on the hidden face of this medallion, where only the wearer would know they existed. A private blessing.

And then — the three drops.

Three malachite shrine figures in gold arched frames. And in the iconography of Buddhism, three figures carry profound meaning.

They may represent the Three Jewels — the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. The foundation of Buddhist philosophy. The triple refuge.

Or the Three Buddhas of Time — Dipankara, the Buddha of the past. Shakyamuni, the Buddha of the present. Maitreya, the Buddha of the future. Past, present, and future held together on a single chain.

Or perhaps the Three Protectors — wisdom, compassion, and power — worn as a talisman against harm.

Whichever reading is true, someone commissioned this piece with intention. And whoever wears her next carries that intention forward.

Donald Stannard Dragon & Malachite Necklace

She stopped me the moment I picked her up.

This is a Donald Stannard — signed, stamped, and like nothing I have ever seen.

Lustrous white baroque pearls alternating with deep forest green malachite beads. At the centre, a gold medallion hand-engraved on both sides with an imperial dragon — and what appears to be Eastern script, the meaning of which we are still uncovering. 🐉

Suspended below — three vivid malachite cabochons in individual gold-tone arched shrine frames, each one reminiscent of a sacred reliquary. The craftsmanship is extraordinary. The intention even more so.

This is 1970s–1980s orientalist jewellery at its most magnificent — when Western designers were drawing deeply from Eastern iconography to create pieces of genuine cultural significance.
