A mother-of-pearl pilgrim flask, from the collection of BADA member Amir Mohtashemi Ltd.
This mother-of-pearl flask was made in 17th-century Gujarat, likely for the Deccani market. Boat-shaped, the flask features a flared, trumpet-shaped neck, a tubular spout to one side, and it stands on a brass splayed foot. Possibly double-spouted in origin, it lacks its original dome-shaped cover, which was probably linked and secured to the rim of the neck with a loop chain. In addition to the foot and spout, the metal fittings include bands on the edges of the vessel to secure the mother-of-pearl plaques, a collar on the base of the neck and on its rim, and two loops flanking the neck for suspension, likely by two loop chains.
Gujarat, India, 17th century.
Mother-of-pearl and brass.
13 cm high, 13.5 cm wide.

The Paschal Light by Glyn Warren Philpot RA (1884 – 1937), from the collection of BADA member Strachan Fine Art.
Looking upwards from the base of the Paschal Candle (the Light of Christ) towards the priests celebrating Mass at the altar beyond, Philpot uses the drama he had absorbed from Spanish art and paints with the intense involvement of a convert to the Roman Catholic church. The rising cloud of incense caught in a shaft of sunlight conjures up the cavernous interior of a great church.
Glyn Philpot was one of the leading British artists of the early 20th century. Initially known as a society portraitist, his work later became more personal and experimental, exploring a wider range of subjects and a more modern approach to painting.
The Paschal Light, 1912
Oil on canvas
30 x 25 ins., 76.2 x 63.5 cms.
Inscribed with the artist’s name and the title on a label on the reverse.

Karen Taylor Fine Art will present an exhibition of forty works by British women artists from 1780 to 1950 at 8 Duke Street, St James’s, London SW1Y, as part of Classic Art London (25 June - 5 July). Many of the works have been recently rediscovered and reattributed. Classic Art London
While the difficulties confronted by women artists are becoming better known, it must not be forgotten that women were not admitted to the Schools of London’s Royal Academy of Arts until the 1860s and remained excluded from its figure drawing classes until the 1890s.
Married British women were not allowed to own property until 1870, including any profits from their work. Consequently, they frequently inhabited the domestic sphere, as reflected in the subjects of many of the drawings in this catalogue.
Dr Rachel Sloan of the Courtauld Gallery will give a talk about British women artists at the gallery at 8 Duke Street, St James’s, on Monday 29 June at 5pm. To attend, please contact Karen Taylor by email at [email protected]

This vintage diamond, turquoise and lapis lazuli link bracelet has been chosen as Hancocks London’s Jewel of the Month for June. 💎
Dating to circa 1970, the articulated link bracelet, by Italian jeweller Illario, is designed as a highly flexible 18ct yellow gold brick link, with a repeating geometric pattern of diamonds, turquoise and lapis lazuli.
The bracelet bears the maker’s mark for Illario, the Italian workshop founded in 1920 by three brothers, Carlo, Vincenzo and Luigi Illario, whose reputation for innovative goldsmithing techniques brought them to the attention of some of Italy’s most distinguished jewellery houses. Among them, notably, was Bulgari, who recognised the quality of their craftsmanship.
