Undergraduates have a preliminary meeting with their contact teacher to discuss how they would be of most benefit to students.
We are a not for profit company, seeking to inspire the next generation of those studying science, technology, engineering and mathematics (the so called “STEM” subjects). A not-for-profit business, currently operating in Edinburgh, Pro Science places carefully selected and trained STEM undergraduates into local schools once a week, for a period of 14 weeks, to support and enrich learning. Whether
through working with groups of struggling students or excelling individuals; during practical lessons or revision sessions. We aim to improve the school pupils’ understanding of STEM, their confidence in these subjects and ultimately also their enjoyment of them. We want to promote positive attitudes towards science and remove negative stigma often associated with it. By opening up channels of communication between school and university students we aim, not only to enhance academic learning but also, to improve many pupils' awareness of higher education. While practising and developing many personal skills during their experiences in schools, the undergraduates also get a real insight into teaching. Pro Science's collaboration with STEM graduate employers - in fields of education, industry and others - will ensure that STEM undergraduates have the chance to excel at their roles in school and get the most out of the experience, but we also aim to make the undergraduates more informed about the huge variety of STEM job opportunities out there. These relationships with employers will provide the undergraduates with unique opportunities to engage with organisations who may want to offer them work experience, internships, 3rd year placements or even graduate jobs.
