What to expect?

Consultation ~
At the start of your first appointment, your osteopath or therapist will ask you questions about your medical history and lifestyle, as well as any symptoms you may be experiencing. This is very important as it will help them to make an accurate diagnosis and suggest appropriate treatment.

Assessment ~
Your Osteopath or therapist will need to examine the area(s) of your body causing discomfort. Sometimes the cause of the problem may be in a different area to the pain, (For example, pain in your lower arm may be linked to the nerves in your neck) so they may need to examine your whole body. They will need to feel for any tightness in the muscles and stiffness in the joints and may need to touch these areas to identify problems. They will explain what they are doing as they go along.

Osteopathic treatment ~
is usually a very gentle process and osteopaths work very hard to make treatment as painless as possible, but you may experience some discomfort during and after treatment. Your Osteopath will warn you if they think that the technique that they are about to use is likely to be uncomfortable and will stop if you tell them that you are feeling too much pain.

Sports massage ~
is a form of deep tissue massage, so a great deal of pressure is put on the muscles to treat them. This pressure can be uncomfortable. The more tense your muscles are, the more uncomfortable it is going to be because they cannot be stretched or manipulated as easily under the pressure of your sports massage therapist's hands (or elbows!). The more relaxed you are going into a massage, the less discomfort you will feel, so regular massage, stretching and foam rolling will help you to loosen up your muscles and have a more comfortable experience.

**Following treatment you may experience some mild soreness in the area of their body that was treated,
this will normally will go away within 48 hours**

Aftercare ~
After the treatment, we provide with 2 -3 exercise to maintain and prevent reoccurrences and gain increased range of movement and to begin your road to recovery. It is important to drink lots of water after your treatment. This helps to remove lactic acid. from your muscles, and extra water will ensure that these toxins will be flushed from your blood stream, not reabsorbed in your muscles.

The Piriformis Muscle ~ is a small muscle located deep in the buttock (behind the gluteus maximus).

The piriformis muscle (causing buttock pain) and may affect the adjacent sciatic nerve (causing pain, tingling, or numbness in the back of the thigh, calf, or foot).

Soft tissue massage techniques (usually used in a Sports Massage) can release the tension and restore proper function to the area.

When was your last treatment and how often should you have treatment ?

Most elite athletes get at least one massage per week.
For most amateur athletes who still take their sport and training seriously or regular gym-goers, once a week to once a fortnight is recommended.

For most people who do the regular light exercise once every two, three or four weeks is usually sufficient, depending on the complaint.

Sports massage - Can help by realigning and stretching the muscles of the back, shoulders, forearms, hamstrings, hip flexors, wrists and improve a player's range of motion. With greater flexibility, you will be able to swing the club as you always wanted to…and get you back to playing your best.

Whats the difference between a regular massage and a sports massage?

Patients normally ask if there is a difference between a regular massage and a sports massage. The difference is fewer candles and aromatherapy, more release of muscle tension, using deep and intense techniques, which results in the mobilisation of the tissues.

Sports massage is more targeted and focuses on treating minor and chronic injuries. It also focuses on improving your posture. Treatment involves using a wider range of techniques, including active and passive stretching to help realign and loosen muscle fibres. Releasing tightness in muscles is a key objective – as the as the muscles around joints relax, it increases the joints’ range of motion. Conditions such as stiff neck and upper back, low back pain, leg muscle tightness and sore shoulders can also be treated.

Keep warm this winter ~ Our muscles tend to tense up in the cold and we often shiver, resulting in increased muscle tension the back that may tighten up and feel achy. If your back is tight already, the effect of the decrease in temperature caused by cold weather will most likely make the muscles tighter and therefore more painful.
