What is sound therapy and how can it help?

Sound Therapy uses sound, music and specialist instruments played in therapeutic ways, combined with deep self-reflection techniques to improve health and wellbeing.

The BAST method of sound therapy combines carefully considered therapeutic sound techniques which have been shown to affect physiology, neurology and psychology with a form of reflective enquiry (a kind of questioning). This approach has been shown to be very effective at improving health and wellbeing.

A study by Ratcliffe (2013) found that ‘bird songs and calls were the type of natural sound most commonly associated with perceived stress recovery and attention restoration.’

Birdsong is great for keeping you de-stressed, so wrap up warm and take a stroll to listen to the birds along the way.

Rhythm can relax us or energize us depending upon the rhythm's speed. When played at a certain number of beats per second, rhythm can alter the patterns of our brainwaves and create an altered state of consciousness.

Case study for Gong Therapy

As part of a case study, one of our students treated a client with MS using Gong Therapy. This particular client has restricted movement. She could get up onto the treatment table only by sitting on the edge and using her arms to pick up each leg, one at a time, and swing it up onto the tabletop. After only a 40 minute treatment, the client was able to swing her legs over the side of the table and get down without using her hands at all.

Not only that, but she was amazed by her range of movement and how much energy she had for days following the treatment. The more treatments she had, the greater her energy bank.

"Drumming ultimately has therapeutic value, providing the emotional and physical benefits collectively known as "drummer's high," an endorphin rush that can only be stimulated by playing music, not simply listening to it."

Can therapeutic sound help me cope with stress?

Yes many people find it helpful. Therapeutic sound can reduce blood pressure, reduce heart rate and relax the autonomic nervous system. It can slow down brainwaves, taking them from awake and alert to a state more deeply meditative. This enables us to be better able to respond openly to the demands of everyday life.

"While music is an extremely popular medium to alleviate stress levels, sound bath therapy is another healing practice that has been found to be helpful in dealing with the tremors related to stress and anxiety and negate the side effects of other health conditions as well."

If a person is anxious about the future, angry or grieving for the past, drums help you to focus the mind on the present. They are also really good for people who need to be reminded of who and where they are, such as those with dementia, post-traumatic stress disorder or mild to moderate dis-associative disorders.

We cover more about this at our Group Sound Therapy training, Practitioner Level Diploma Training and Group Sound Arts Course.

Studies show that noise has a powerful physical effect on our brains, causing elevated levels of stress hormones. Living in a consistently noisy environment will cause you to experience extremely high levels of these harmful hormones. A mixture of therapeutic music and silence could be the key to helping this predominantly urban problem.
