Today see’s Ian Featherstone and a majority of the SES Team take on their final day of their deployment to Rochester Castle in Kent.

Big well done to the team there and the multiple other SES Officers we have deployed around Sussex and the wider UK.
The Great Boot Debate | Day 5 - ‘Tacticool’ boots
** UPDATED ** late entry see boot 5!

Today, for our final day of this debate, we thought we would have some fun with some of the boots; which although great in conception, are more for their looks rather than practicality in the field of security.
This doesn’t mean they are useless, but were probably designed with a very specific role intended, and it wasn’t security work.

So, what is ‘Tacticool’?
A portmanteau of tactical and cool, ‘Tacticool’ has been around since at least 2004, the date of the earliest Urban Dictionary definition (“Descriptive word for equipment or clothing that does not have any tactical purpose; but looks cool”).

The nominations are:
Boot 1 - Adidas GSG9
This boot has been through multiple versions over the years, and each one has only got better and better looking. It has now started to resemble some form of boxers boot.

It’s true that the boot feels like a trainer and a slipper at the same time; but this is soon lost after about 45 minutes when it makes your feet sweat and turns the boot into a sauna.

Boot 2 - UnderArmour Stella
Much like the GSG9, these little sauna boots are great for a short deployment sneaking around embassies undetected with black tape over your eyes; but probably not the best for prolonged use.

Boot 3 - Oakley SI Light Patrol Boot
It is true, the once famous brand for making sunglasses dipped their toes into making tactical boots. In fact at one time they held a contact with the US Military to supply their footwear.

The light patrol boot is exactly that, a trainer with a extended ankle support.

Boot 4 - Salomon Quest 4D Forces 2
Gortex they maybe, beautiful they are not. These boots are frustratingly good, it’s just you will need to remortgage your house or not feed your children every time you need to buy and then replace a set.

Again, built for a specific use then boots will probably last 6 months in a prime condition before giving up the ghost. For that reason we would suggest giving in a buying some thing else.

Bonus Boot 5 - Crocs Tactical Boot
This late entry was sent to us this morning and what an absolute honking piece of kit this is!

No no no no! Just no! Although, there is a prize for anyone wearing these this summer!

We hope you enjoyed our 5 day extravaganza on all things boots!

Stay safe wherever you are, we will be back soon with another kit review.

The Great Boot Debate | Day 4 - Lightweight and Breathable Boots

During the warmer Spring and Summer months, you’re feet will start to sweat more and become uncomfortable, especially with if you are working in the festival security space. When the summer season does hit, there becomes less need for the Gortex lined boots, and you need to cut down the additional weight that you are carrying.

Boot 1 - Altberg Sneaker Microlite

Much like the lightweight Lowa The Sneeker Original / Microlite (black) is a high leg, ultra lightweight patrolling boot, with a non-waterproof Cambrelle lining around the foot, heel and ankle. The leg is unlined. Unique graded underfoot midsole flex to give optimum 'kneel to fire' boot flex - whilst retaining good torsional resistance for deployment on uneven terrain. Superb ultra lightweight unlined special forces boots. Ultra comfortable.

Where can you buy this boot:
https://www.militarykit.com/products/altberg-sneeker-microlite-black-boots?variant=7195680309306

Boot 2 - Lowa Elite Lightweight Boot

The Lowa Elite Light is a high leg full grain leather brown combat boot, which if maintained well offers good water repellency, making this combat boot a serious competitor as a lightweight tabbing boot.

This Lowa Tactical Military Boot also comes with a black Vibram sole for durability matching that of boots issued by the military. The lacing system features open hooks in the top half and d-ring towards the bottom. The Lowa Elite Light has a Vitatex lining fro breathability.

Where can you buy this boot:
https://lowamilitaryboots.com/lowa-elite-light-boot

Boot 3 - AKU Navy Seal Spider II

Like its bigger gortex family member the AKU ‘Pilgrim’, the Spider boots is an excellent all rounder. This ankle cut boot is very light weight, and feels more like a running trainer than a classic boot.

Where can you buy this boot:
https://www.uktactical.com/product/aku-boots-ns564-spider-navy-seal-black-11221

Boot 4 - Magnum Panther

Built to protect and support your feet during long, hard days, Magnum boots are constructed to the highest technical and design standards that will keep your feet in great condition.

The Magnum Panther 8.0 Side-Zip is the ideal boot for security personnel, or anyone else who needs a durable boot to do their job, featuring a side-zip which follows the shape of the boot so they're extra-easy to take off after a long shift.

Always great to work alongside fellow professionals from different industries.
The Great Boot Debate | Day 3 - Gortex and Waterproof Boot count down:

Number 1 - Lowa 'GTX Mountain Boot'

With its clean and easy to maintain looks, along with its waterproof qualities, these Mountain Boots are Lowa’s number one best seller from their Task Force Collection.

The fully waterproof Mountain GTX is identical in most respects to the Combat GTX (i.e. the specification and style), with the key difference being the shorter leg shaft and the addition of AWP (Asymmetric Walking Position) technology.

Smart, hard wearing, easy-to-maintain and with all of Lowa's fantastic foot technology combined in a patrol boot for the discerning professional. This makes the Mountain GTX a superb all-rounder, as a military boot or for uniform and non uniform duties alike.

Lowa Mountain Boots are ideal for Police, Security professionals, Military and Emergency Services personnel.

Where can I buy these boots?

Well that's all we have today, tune back in for tomorrows instalment:
Day 4 | Lightweight and breathable boots.
The Great Boot Debate | Day 3 - Gortex and Waterproof Boot count down:

Number 2 - AKU Pilgrim

The AKU name is a relative unknown outside of the Forces community, however its good work and growing reputation has meant that people are starting to warm to the brand.

The 'PILGRIM GTX' is a true multi-purpose highly breathable boot with outstanding support, stability and impact absorption. Thanks to these features, Pilgrim GTX performs well in stability for demanding and dynamic conditions.

One of the draw backs with using the AKU boot is that it does not have a leather outer layer, meaning for those who like a highly polished look or if its requirement will unfortunately have to look elsewhere.

Where can you buy them from?
https://www.tradeinn.com/trekkinn/en/aku-pilgrim-hl-goretex-combat-hiking-boots/137144971/p?utm_source=google_products&utm_medium=merchant&id_producte=8571736&country=uk&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI0cCFz5Td-AIVD5ntCh2P_gWmEAQYAiABEgJGE_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
The Great Boot Debate | Day 3 - Gortex and Waterproof Boot count down:

Number 3 - HanWag - SF Boot

This boot and like its closest competitor from 'Lowa' are by far the best overall Gortex boot that money can probably buy right now.

Not cheap, the boot will last a long time given the right care and attention.

Hanwag's Special Forces set themselves apart from all other combat boots; their quality stands out from the moment you first lace them up. Compared to a Lowa Patrol or Mountain GTX, the cosmetic similarities are striking; you'd be hard pushed to tell them apart at a glance.

It's when you look closely at the Special Forces that you really appreciate the differences - Hanwag really do pay attention to detail. The forefoot lacing eyelets are all equipped with ball bearings; these ensure that the lace tensions easily and consistently. The laces avoid snags and allow the wearer to get the lacing exactly right.

Where you can buy them from:
https://www.trekitt.co.uk/footwear/boots/hanwag-special-forces-lx-military-boots-mod-brown__10180
The Great Boot Debate | Day 3 - Gortex and Waterproof Boot count down:

Number 4 - Magnum Viper Pro

Although not our favourite pair of boots on the market, they do offer great value for money; especially in the current market.

Magnum boots often "does exactly what is says on the the tin", there are certainly no bells and whistles.

Whilst it’s hard to say how long a pair of Magnums will last due to the care, attention and use they are given by the owner, it is safe to say that they will comfortably make it through a festival season, if they looked after. This is something that not all the best boots are known for ... longevity.

A big plus of the Viper Pro is their versatility, one day in the middle of a festival field, next they can be cleaned, polished and they will good in a office block. Unlike others on this list, they don't look overtly 'Military'.

The Great Boot Debate | Day 3 - Gortex and 'Waterproof' boots

How many times have we seen another security operative arrive for their shift in the latest fashionable trainers/shoes and you've thought "you aren't making the night in those". Sure enough by 22:35 they are complaining about their feet.

Well as we now know, foot wear is one of the most vital pieces of equipment the security professional can purchase.

What is the difference between “waterproof” and “water-repellent”?

Waterproof means that the material used is so dense that absolutely no water can get through and you stay dry, no matter how long you are out in the rain. Gortex is part of this family.

Water-repellent, sometimes also called water-resistant, means that the water rolls off the surface and thus does not penetrate into the interior. However, you will not stay dry if you are exposed to continuous or heavy rain for a long time.

Check the labels on your boots before making a purchase.

Whilst we do not actively promote the spending of a days wages on a pair of boots; it is worth remembering; "Buy cheap, Buy Twice"

In the next hour, we will show our 4 choices of 'Gortex' and Waterproof boots.

Photos from Security and Event Solutions's post 05/07/2022

The Great Boot Debate | Day 2 - Corporate Footwear.

In the security industry there comes a time when you have to cast aside the trusty but tiresome magnums, which through lack of polishing and care have now turned grey in colour. Realising that the military style 'boot' isn't suitable for the multimillion pound corporation culture you are tasked with looking after, you may have to turn to the high street and look for a 'proper pair of shoes'.

Although the wearing of corporate/dress shoes should be down to the risk assessment by your line management, in general terms if you are asked to wear a full suit, including a tie; then you should be looking to wear the appropriate footwear to match.

Like wise the opposite advice applies, if you are going to work at a festival site, then your Manager or the person tasking you should point out what the appropriate footwear for the task will be. The wearing of a set of shoes in the middle of a muddy field is also going to lead to problems.

General Guidance:
- No heels
- Laced shoes/boots only
- No slip ons
- Good grip
- Black Socks - Never White
- Belt colour should match the colour of your shoes (In a suit)

The black shoe should be looked after and polished regularly to avoid them becoming scruffy and worn out. Always carry a spare pair of laces with you, remember without footwear the Security Operative becomes very useless very quickly.

Attached are some photos of some examples of 'appropriate' choices of black leather shoes that we would recommend.

Tomorrow .... Day 3 - Gortex and 'Waterproof' Boots
