Graduates to be hit with ‘brutal’ student loan interest rates of up to 12%

Interest rates on student loans are set to soar to as high as 12%, costing higher-earning graduates an extra £3,000 unless the government intervenes, according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies.
Interest rates on post-2012 student loans are based on the retail prices index, with the rise in the RPI in March meaning most recent graduates in England and Wales will be charged 9% from September, up from the current rate of 1.5%.

Work remote, get paid less? The battle dividing offices will define the future of work

Mobility and freedom are the new prizes for the professional working class. But some companies fail to grasp the scale and sweep of change
The world of work was already quite sick before the coronavirus took hold, but the pandemic put rocket boosters on cultural change.
We can see the impact of this in every metric around work: during the Great Resignation of 2021, millions of American workers resigned en masse. Workers worldwide have declared that they would quit their jobs if not provided with flexibility.
The reduction in corporate property rents last year as high as 10%, with huge changes in the use of office space and co-working space. And the city has a new competitor: the suburb. The flight to suburbia during the pandemic has accounted for a rise in the property market for residences outside city centers. For downtown districts to attract and retain people as places to live and work, city centers will need to be redesigned completely.

Reports of demise of men’s suit greatly exaggerated

It might have been removed from the basket of goods used to calculate the UK’s annual inflation rate but that does not mean the suit is dead. If it really were the death knell for the staple of men’s business attire then surely the Office for National Statistics would have replaced it with some tracksuit bottoms or even some shorts? Instead, what’s taken its place is “a formal jacket or blazer”. It is an admission that these two very strange years of pandemic living have altered our daily sartorial habits but not transformed them completely.

Blue-sky thinking: new rules allow digital nomads to work in the sun

The pandemic locked us down, but at the same time freed many workers from the confines of the office. A new breed of digital nomads emerged – people who took their laptops, jumped on planes and set up shop in some of the most beautiful parts of the world. And with them have come schemes to make it easier for them to stay for months on end.

Blue-sky thinking: new rules allow digital nomads to work in the sun Setting up a remote ‘office’ is a freedom many are now used to. So why not do it in a beautiful part of the world?

To be happy you have to feel you belong 21/02/2022

To be happy you have to feel you belong

At some point in our lives, we will all feel we don’t belong – we are too fat, too thin, too dumb, too clever-by-half, too rich, too poor – but the reality is that there are people out there gunning for us whoever we are. For every person who wants to keep refugees out of the country, there’s a person willing to offer them a room in their home. For every government benefit cut, there are people setting up foodbanks. I choose to believe in the words of my father – the British are fair and open-minded people – and I am proud to be one of them. Even if not all British systems wholly represent that yet, we will work to ensure that someday they will. I choose to believe that we all belong to humankind, and it is by showing humanity and kindness to ourselves and others that we can find our place to belong and help others to find theirs.

To be happy you have to feel you belong Psychiatrist Holan Liang, the daughter of Chinese immigrants, discovered for herself how important a sense of belonging is
