Pros and cons of Outdoor Pool

Pros

- Heats under the sun - Pool heaters aren't always necessary in an outdoor pool depending on the country to which you live.
- Lower cost to build and run - Not having to build an enclosure, don't need to worry about humidity, or run the pool all year can save thousands.
- Sunny days can be enjoyed in the outdoors - Enjoy sunbathing, barbecuing by the pool, and poolside fire pits.
- Integrate classic pool accessories
- Pool accessories like umbrellas, slides, deck jets, and waterfalls are perfectly suited for outdoor swimming pools. (You can put these in an indoor pool, but you will have to account for space, costs, and necessity).

Cons

- Shorter swimming season - Some areas are temperate enough to swim throughout the year with the help of a pool heater, but most outdoor pools can only be used 4 to 5 months on average.
- More work to clean - You'll have your fair share of leaves and debris to fish out of the pool along with the occasional intense cleanup after a storm.
- You may not want to swim at night - You'll probably need good lighting and possibly a pool heater for comfortable night swimming.
- May attract critters and unauthorized swimmers - Think wildlife, feral cats, and mischievous neighborhood kids.
- Weather can get in the way - Be prepared for thunderstorms, wind, and other weather conditions to occasionally put a damper on your poolside plans.

Pros and cons of Indoor Pool

Pros

- Year-round use of the pool.

- Less maintenance. If you have an indoor pool, it’s a whole lot easier to keep leaves and insects out of it, eliminating the need to skim the surface as much. Indoor pool also prevents algae growth, which enters your pool clinging to other plant material. Swimmers also won’t track grass, sand or soil into the water. You won’t even have that suntan lotion slick that tends to build up on the surface of outdoor pools.

- Protection from sun. When your pool is indoors, you can forget worrying about sunscreen, shade, and whether the kids (or you) will be scorched by the sun or wind. Though would still advise sunscreen to be on the safe side.

- Privacy. with an indoor pool its a lot easier to make private than an outdoor pool depending on your neighbour situation.

Cons

- Humidity. Pools lose a lot of moisture into the air, even if you cover them when not in use, which can be a problem. You need special equipment to deal with the humidity of an indoor pool.

- Initial cost. Building an indoor pool costs considerably more than an outdoor pool of the same size. Oh, and do you have the space for this?

How to choose the right pool cover!

Determining the size of your pool cover

To properly cover and close, your pool cover must be the correct size of your pool. For an in-ground pool, according to experts, your pool cover should extend at least 3 inches past the edge of the pool. Prior to purchasing a cover, you will need to measure your pool to find the correct dimensions.

The shape of your pool cover

Pool designs that have symmetrical shapes and straight lines such as rectangular, Kidney or Grecian are typically found at many retailers. However, pools with rounded edges or asymmetrical sides require more effort. If your pool has a unique shape, you will most likely need to purchase a custom pool cover.

Choosing the material of your pool cover

Swimming pool covers typically come in 3 standard materials to choose from: Mesh Safety Covers, Heavy-Duty Mesh Safety Covers, and Solid Safety Covers.

Mesh safety covers: Mesh safety covers are the standard covers for pools. They are lightweight, easy to clean, and easy to store. The thin mesh material allows certain light to pass through. Mesh covers let about 5% of sunlight through to your pool. Snow and water will melt through to the pool but debris will not be able to pass through the cover. The mesh cover will also protect the pool from children or pets falling in.

Heavy - duty mesh safety covers: A solid pool cover is typically made out of solid vinyl or laminated polyester fabric coated material. The solid covers provide maximum protection for the pool and for people and animals around it. Solid pool covers block 100% of sunlight, which inhibits algae growth. Solid covers make your spring pool opening more efficient.

Automatic pool covers

Automatic pool covers utilize the latest in mechanics and technology, however, it is important to assess if an auto-cover will work for your space and climate.

Tips on how to keep your pool in good condition throughout winter

Check water levels:

England is accustom to a lot of rain through the winter months (and all year round) which increases the water levels in your pool. This could be a problem for your pool in the winter as the water can start to flow into the drained pump and filter systems, which in turn can cause issues and frost damage. For some pool liners, it is critical to keep water levels from getting too high as water can get behind the liner causing issues.

Check if your Pool Cover is secure:

You need to regularly check if your pool cover is secure. Heavy rain and high winds can damage your pool cover. If we get a lot of snow this can also cause damage to the covers. It is important to make sure that the winter cover is in place protecting your swimming pool and immediately fix any damage that may occur.

Check to see if your winter pool cover is being held in place by water blocks or water bags. If you have a pool safety cover, make sure that all that components are securing the cover to your patio/deck area.

Is your pool going green?

Algae typically does not grow in water temperatures that are less than 60 °F/15 °C; however, it is possible, and with the uncharacteristically mild December, the risk of algae formation is significantly increased.
If you notice any algae formation, then add shock treatment or algaecide to your pool water. Preventing extended periods of algae growth will help save your pool’s liner, concrete, fixtures, fittings, & etc. Managing algae growth can be a pain when you open your pool for the summer! It also costs more to treat a green pool than treating a clean pool.

Check your pool equipment:

When winterizing your pool, all the equipment such as the pump filter and heating systems should be fully drained down to prevent damage from standing water and frost. With high winds and heavy rain in the winter months, it is worth checking if your pool equipment has not gathered any water which could cause problems.

Part 2: Does having a pool at your UK holiday home affect your insurance?

Basic physical safety measures for the pool that insurances may include:

· The pool surround should be level and non-slip.

· The pool edge and steps should be highlighted.

· Outdoor pools should be fenced around with a fence height that prevents small children from scaling it. The gate should have a high latch which is locked at night and out of season.

· The depth of the pool is displayed at both the shallow and deep end.

· The pool water should be less than 1.5 metres deep and there is no abrupt changes of depth (steeper than 1:15)

· Rescue poles or rings provided.

· No diving from the poolside.

· There are no activities or equipment used to generate high excitement.

***This could vary with different insurers so it’s good to check in with and know what their specific policies are.

Part 1: Does having a pool at your UK holiday Home affect your insurance??

There are no swimming pool specific health and safety laws, however, it is necessary for the policyholder to have measures in place which comply with their general duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the associated regulations. You must carry out a risk assessment to help decide what it is you must do to make your pool safe. It must be regularly reviewed and the measures to be implemented may include the tick list below:

· A working poolside alarm.

· Daily checks to ensure the alarm works.

· No children under 15 years of age bathe unsupervised.

· Signage detailing the above age restriction.

· Emergency Action Notices to be displayed, detailing what to do in the event of an emergency.

· Signage making it clear that the consumption of food or drink is not allowed at pool side.

· We strongly recommend members to obtain the publication ‘Managing Health and Safety in Swimming Pools’ (HSG179), available from HSE publications.

This could vary with different insurers so it’s good to check in with and know what their specific policies are.

5 tips to keep your pool safer….

Set up barriers

Physical barricades such as walls, fences and covers are the first line of defense.
- Fences around pools should be a minimum of 4 feet high but 5 feet or higher is preferable.
- Spaces in the fence should not be wide enough for a small child or pets to fit through.
- Holes, cutouts or stones in a wall or fence should not be big enough to provide hand and footholds (kids love to climb). If there are cutouts in the fence (such as decorative shapes) make sure the openings are less than 1 ¾ inches wide.
- Don’t put structures like benches or large stones nearby. These objects can help a child hop the fence.
- Gates to the pool area should have self-closing latches that are beyond the reach of children.

Pool Covers

Both manual & automatic covers are available. Manually laid covers stretch across the top of the pool (either by hand or a crank mechanism) & anchor into the pool deck. Automatically retracting covers tend to be easier to use, but also more expensive.
Another option is a pool safety net, which stretches over the surface of the pool and anchors down around its perimeter. When installed correctly, their strong synthetic materials catch and support kids & small animals that tumble in.

Secure Gates & Doors

Consider all the pathways that children & animals could get to the water. Add security devices that make it harder to pass through unsupervised. Child proofing doors are an inexpensive, easy way of adding that extra bit of security. Gate alarms sound a signal when they open, so you’ll know right away if a child breaks through. There are several options specifically designed for pool safety. Consider adding alarms to windows or doggy doors if any of them access the pool area.

Pool Alarm

If you’re still concerned about kids & pets getting into the pool after you’ve secured the area, you can also consider getting a pool alarm. The alarm works by detecting in-water motion that sounds an alert when activity is detected. There is a large variety of alarms to choose from.

Pool Drains & Drain Covers

Get an annual inspection of the pool drain, drain covers & overall health of your pool. It's always good practice and helps point out anything you may need to replace to keep people safe while using your pool.
