Northern Ireland Versus Arthritis

Comments

Good Morning
It is 02.28 and I have woken up in a lot of pain in my knee.
I had a steroid injection in it yesterday afternoon.
At first it was great, the heat went out of the knee quickly.
I sat in the car for around 20 minutes while my daughter went food shopping then straight home and sat down until I went to bed.
It is so sore now it woke me up.
Is that normal?
First steroid injection.
My knee is always sore hence the injection but never woke me up at night.
I do know it can take a few weeks to work.
Just surprised to be woken so fully this time of the morning.
Just signed up, will have a read through the page later. I am a taxi driver in Belfast and have real trouble with my knees. I am trying to find a support cushion for my right knee in particular as I get very sore pains in my knee where it rests against the door when I am driving. It get so bad sometimes that I have to finish work early. My right leg is also slightly twisted due to a RTA nearly 30 years ago. Any help much appreciated.
I believe with all my heart that attending versus arthritis pain management programme was the turning point for me. I now deliver this programme to as many people as possible. Versus Arthritis is always on the tip of my tongue.

Hi. Does anyone else here have Hidradenitis Suppurativa? I am struggling with abscesses at the minute and my GP (who is fantastic) doesn't want to start me on long term antibiotics because I'm only 14 weeks on my Methotrexate.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Adulting with Arthritis

Leaving school and becoming an adult can be an exciting, but it also brings with it so many questions! I want to go travelling... What happens with my medication? I want to become a student... Will my arthritis hold me back? I want to apply for a job... Should I mention my arthritis? I want to start a family... Can I get pregnant? Can I get a tattoo? Or a piercing? Do I really need to avoid alcohol?

Sign up for our upcoming event ""Adulting with Arthritis"" on 13th November to get all the answers. You can attend online or in-person in Belfast. Everyone will have the opportunity to ask questions anonymously and have them answered by a panel of young people and other experts.

THANK YOU! As many of you will know Dr Adrian Pendleton took on the great challenge of cycling 672 miles, the length of Ireland for Versus Arthritis! He has only gone and raised over £5000. What an achievement! A heartfelt thank you to Dr Adrian Pendleton. The challenge and achievement has been immense and an inspiration to many living with persistent pain. So many memories and landmarks. This photo book put together for him and fundraising teammates says it all! THANK YOU, Adrian. Join us in saying THANK YOU!

Long waiting times are destroying lives. Recent announcements from governments across the UK of more funding to tackle the essential surgery backlog is welcome, but experts have warned it’s going to take a long time to bring waiting lists down. We’re calling on politicians to make sure everyone waiting for joint replacement operations has access to support from their local health service now to help manage their pain, look after their mental health and stay well for their operation. Can you send a message to your elected representative(s) today and ask them to back our call? Take action now: https://bit.ly/3DzyiBg

WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on people’s mental health. Some groups, including health and other frontline workers, students, people living alone, and those with pre-existing mental and physical health conditions, have been particularly affected. The correlation between mental and physical health is very real, pain and other physical symptoms affect how we are feeling and overtime our mental health can be adversely impacted. Likewise feeling low, anxious, depressed and fearful for a long period of time can impact us physically as we become fatigued, in pain and generally unwell.

It is important to look after both our mental and physical health and to understand how we can manage these well ourselves to work towards a healthier life, regardless of the conditions and challenges we have. At Versus Arthritis, we offer accredited training programmes for those living with any long term condition and these focus on breaking out of the symptom cycle by using the self management tools at our disposal.

We are pleased to be working alongside the Mental Health First Aid team at Allstate Northern Irelandto offer a taster session on 11th October to all their staff helping to understand these links and to encourage accessing our courses and other self management support.

For more information or to sign up for any of our courses, please contact [email protected] or call 028 9078 2940.

Do you or does someone you know have arthritis?
Are you on medication? What treatments do you find helpful?

Today we are looking at Treatment and Medication. Various treatments and medications are available depending on what type of arthritis you have e.g. there are 3 main ways to treat Rheumatoid Arthritis; Drugs, physical therapies and surgery.

The 4 main groups of medications used to treat Rheumatoid Arthritis are painkillers, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and steroids (also known as corticosteroids).

There are various actions you can take to manage Osteoarthritis. These include exercise, hydrotherapy, weight-management and physiotherapy amongst others.

Medications for Osteoarthritis, include but are not limited to, painkillers, NSAIDS, Capsaicin cream, steroid injections and surgery.

We really have only touched on these subjects today. For more information on treatments for arthritis visit our website https://bit.ly/2VNlLKp or attend our online Pain Management and Medications Health Talk (Mary McBride, Lead Practice General Pharmacist) which is taking place next week - Wednesday 13th October 12 noon.
