Pulman's Weekly News has now been awarded Best Local News Publication – West Country in the 2021 Global Business Awards hosted by Corp Today Magazine.

Pulman's Weekly News & Advertiser Series was put forward to Corp Today’s dedicated team of in-house researchers who have handpicked each of their 2021 award winners. This proven approach ensures that they award on merit, and not popularity, and recognise the very best in the business.

Michael Banks, MD of Pulman's Weekly News, said; “To be acknowledged as Best Local News Publication for the entire region is a further feather in the cap, especially in these uncertain times. Our news coverage has now evolved to provide both video and online reporting, and I am delighted the team have won such a prestigious award in such a wide-reaching area. Included in this new area are neighbouring towns within Dorset, who benefit greatly from their own bespoke PR brands, such as Experience Lyme Regis.

“The effort put in by our team and in particular past developmental guidance from digital media entrepreneur Duncan Williams, drawing upon parallel success working with Reach Plc and InYourArea projects, as well as our own individual feature writers, contributors and staff, all represents a collective belief we all share in the future of hyperlocal media. I am proud that we have been awarded such a significant prize in difficult times which highlights the quality of our work on behalf of the West Country communities and small business advertisers we serve.”

Corp Today Magazine who claim readers consisting of 138,000 ‘C’ Level professional, VPs, Consultants, VCs, Managers and advisors, will announce the award winners in all categories shortly.

Top marks for this river restoration project...

Dodham Brook Enhancement Project update from Yeovil Rivers Community Trust!

If you have been down to Yeovil Country Park recently you may have spotted the progress we have made on the enhancement work, along Dodham Brook, between the footbridge and weir.

Three bench structures (like islands in the brook) have now been installed to help promote the restoration of the natural river processes and provide a diversified habitat for the animals living along Dodham Brook. This includes the colony of endangered water vole who live within Yeovil Country Park, kingfishers, fish, and an array of other wildlife.

Secured by timber posts and coir matting, we have packed brushwood bundles (made from spare branch material around Yeovil Country Park) inside the frames. This will create a fantastic underwater habitat for fish and invertebrates. We have also added silt on top, providing us with a great space for planting native wild aquatic plants this spring.

A big thank you to everyone who has been involved in this stage of the project and we look forward to sharing more updates with you soon.

Thank you from the Yeovil Rivers Community Trust

Mental Health Awareness – Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder, used to be known as manic depression. The old name describes the disorder quite simply and aptly. People who are caught up in this mental health condition experience mood swings that include extreme emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression).

There are two common forms of Bipolar Disorder. Bipolar 1 disorder causes mania and may cause depression, while Bipolar 2 disorder causes hypomania and depression. People with Bipolar 2 typically spend considerably more time in a depressive state.

A manic episode is normally so intense it interferes with daily activities and it is very difficult to bring the person back to a calmer state. When gripped in the manic phase people can need less sleep; become more talkative with racing thoughts; become abnormally energised and jumpy; have exaggerated sense of self, even a euphoria; make irrational decisions or engage in high-risk behaviours.

A hypomanic episode displays the same symptoms; however they show as less severe than in a manic episode. Their level though is still extreme enough for people to notice a marked change in behaviour.

The depression phase may include extended periods of sadness and hopelessness; withdrawing from people or previously enjoyed activities; feeling tired; feeling tearful; lacking in confidence and self-esteem.

Initial episodes of mania typically last at least a week followed by a depression that can be longer. If left unchecked, episodes tend to become more frequent and last longer as time passes.

The cause of bipolar disorder is unknown and it may be contributed to by a combination of physical, environmental and social factors. If you suspect that you may be suffering from this disorder your first port of call is to have discussions with you GP. If necessary, they will be able to direct you towards a mental health professional who can make a more thorough assessment. They can then inform you of treatment options that can help you maintain stable moods and on how to manage your symptoms.

Stay safe. Stay well. Seek the support you need.

As today marks the start of Women’s History Month there was no way Axminster Heritage were going to let it pass without celebrating the life of Axminster-born woman Nancy Dawson.

Nancy Dawson is believed to have been born at Coaxdon, Weycroft, Axminster in 1730 and was (according to James Davidson - generally the most reliable of sources) a barmaid at The George in her youth. Nancy longed for more however, and it wasn’t long before she left Axminster for the bright lights of London.

Nancy became a dancer and gained work at Sadler’s Wells, Covent Garden and Drury Lane. In October 1759 the hornpipe that she danced in the ‘Beggar’s Opera’ was to turn her into a celebrity – so much so that there are still portraits of Nancy on display at the National Portrait Gallery and in the British Museum today. The dance was performed to a tune (thought to be attributed to the English composer, Thomas Arne), which then had words set, a song called ‘The Ballad of Nancy Dawson’ attributed to the English actor, playwright, poet and songwriter, George Alexander Stevens (1710 – 6 September 1780).

The Ballad of Nancy Dawson

Of all the girls in our town,
The red, the black, the fair, the brown,
That dance and prance it up and down,
There's none like Nancy Dawson.

Her easy mien, her shape so neat,
She foots, she trips, she looks so sweet;
Her every motion’s so complete,
I die for Nancy Dawson.

See how she comes to give surprise,
With joy and pleasure in her eyes:
To give delight she always tries,
So means my Nancy Dawson.

Was there no task, t’obstruct the way,
No shutter old, no house so gay,
A bet of fifty pounds I’d lay,
That I gained Nancy Dawson.

See how the opera takes a run
Exceeding Hamlet, Lear and Lun
Though in it there would be no fun,
Was’t not for Nancy Dawson.

Though beard and brent charm ev’ry night
And female peachum’s justly right,
And filch and lockit please the sight,
‘Tis kept by Nancy Dawson.

See little davey strut and puff,
‘Confound the opera and such stuff,
My house is never full enough,
A curse on Nancy Dawson”.

Though G[arric]k he had has his day
And forced the town his laws t’obey,
With Jonny Rich is come in play,
With the help of Nancy Dawson.

Nancy used to visit friends and relatives in Axminster, dancing for the amusement of her friends at the local inns. It is believed that Nancy’s metropolitan ways were often remarked on. A Mrs Burch told James Davidson that she had seen Nancy Dawson dance a minuet at the Dolphin Inn in petticoats trimmed with silver lace. Nancy was to retire from the stage in 1763 and died three years later on 26th May 1767 at Haverstock Hill. Nancy’s public reputation was as a beautiful and graceful dancer, but with a shrewish temper and a heartless, mercenary and immoral approach to life.

The information above comes from ‘Notes on Axminster’ by Major W H Wilkin (1933), which can be found in Axminster Library.

More information on Nancy can also be found on the Axminster Heritage website here:https://axminsterheritage.org/wp/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Pen_portraits.pdf

Pulman's Weekly News

The Pulman's Weekly News and Advertiser series were founded in England in 1857 by Axminster born George Pulman. (His name is often mistakenly confused with the American railroad pioneer.)

The Pulman's series are important records of a prolific Victorian era press group that went on to span multiple decades and bridge three consecutive centuries.

Over the years the Pulman's titles expanded across East Devon, West Dorset and South Somerset and were published by a succession of newspaper owners.

In 2012 the papers morphed into the Pulman's View From series, covering predominantly the same areas as before and, in keeping with the times, developed an online presence.
