Wednesday 6/3/1998 • Respect to Versatile feat. Pepe Braddock, Gilb’R, I:Cube live and special guest DJ Sneak.

Respect is certainly taking a victory lap this spring of 1998. Following in the footsteps of the Daft Club, Yellow Club, and Cassius Club, our focus shifts to celebrating the Versatile label, another leading presence of this French Touch 1.0. Created by Gilb’R, a pivotal DJ at Radio Nova since the early 90s, Versatile released two major hits of the movement: ‘Disco Cubizm’ by I:Cube, remixed by Daft Punk, and ‘Venus’ by Cheek, courtesy of Gregory. But don’t be fooled by these appearances of being a hit maker. True to the personality of its founder Gilb’R, Versatile develops a universe that is both charismatic and whimsical, enlightened and eccentric.

In this context, celebrating the release of the first album by Pepe Braddock (who had been one half of another French Touch founding duo, Trankilou) is particularly revealing; it showcases an artist who is beyond classification — both brilliant and unyielding, someone who disregards all rules and expectations. In their own ways, Versatile and Pepe Bradock were giving depth and complexity to the scene, some kind of disco-situationism, blending playful energy and avant-garde spirit.

On a side note, the special guests of the night were a live performance by I:Cube and a DJ set by DJ Sneak, the Chicago House star. WOW.

Wednesday 4/29/1998 • Cassius Club

First Cassius Club and probably one of their first public appearances ever. Philippe Zdar and Hubert Boombass, united by a fraternal bond in Cassius, were integrating the sampler into their DJ set up for a performance that was 50% DJ, 50% live, 100% gonzo. That night, special guests included Ivan Smagghe, the French-American artist Senz and Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk.

“Zdar is back! While waiting for the second opus of Motorbass, Philippe Zdar is doing his Cassius Club with his partner Boombass (La Funk Mob & Solaar) and the entire Bass Mafia.”

🎄 It’s almost Christmas and we’re thrilled to announce that the Laidback mix of our 2002 ‘After The Pl***oy Mansion’ is now available for streaming on 🎧 As you get into the holiday spirit, let’s take a little trip down memory lane, back to where it all began.

After the global sensation of the first mix ‘A Night At The Pl***oy Mansion’ and the exhilarating tour that followed, 2002 welcomed a new rhythm with a double CD ‘After the Pl***oy Mansion’. Envision unwinding in a XXL room at the Standard Hollywood, the dawn of LA as your backdrop, surrounded by old and new friends. What music would be the perfect soundtrack for this moment?

If the after-Mansion party at the hotel really did happen, Dimitri, the maestro behind this mix, never showed up. He’s the artist who can conjure the ideal after-party soundtrack without ever setting foot in one. This first part, the Laidback mix, is his vision turned into reality – the essence of an playful morning he never attended, yet understood intimately. And how can we be so sure? Because we, the Respect crew, were always at the afters. Dimitri might have the soul, we had the real-life practice.
