Organised by ECPM – Together Against the Death Penalty, sponsored by France (the host country), and co-sponsored by the European Union and Switzerland, the Congress will take place from 30 June to 2 July 2026 at the Maison de la Radio et de la Musique and then at the Hôtel de Lassay.

DES VIES EN SUSPENS : LA SITUATION DES PERSONNES CONDAMNÉES À MORT AU CAMEROUN

📑 ECPM, Droit et Paix et le Réseau des avocats camerounais contre la peine de mort (RACOPEM) publient un rapport de mission d’enquête réalisé entre mars et octobre 2025 sur la situation des personnes condamnées à mort au Cameroun.

🔴 Bien qu’aucune exécution n’ait eu lieu depuis 1997, la peine capitale est encore aujourd’hui maintenue dans la législation pénale, faisant du Cameroun l’un des deux seuls pays d’Afrique centrale avec la République démocratique du Congo à maintenir la peine de mort dans son arsenal législatif.

🔍 Pour cette enquête, les équipes ont visité 10 prisons, rencontré 45 personnes condamnées à mort et 6 membres du personnel pénitentiaire. À travers les récits des personnes condamnées à mort, mais aussi de leurs familles et de leurs avocat·es, le rapport met en lumière les failles de la chaîne pénale camerounaise et des conditions de détention éprouvantes.

LIVES ON HOLD: THE SITUATION OF PEOPLE SENTENCED TO DEATH IN CAMEROON

📑 ECPM, Droit et Paix and the Network of Cameroonian Lawyers Against the Death Penalty (RACOPEM) have published a report on a fact-finding mission carried out between March and October 2025 on the situation of those sentenced to death in Cameroon.

🔴 Although no executions have been carried out since 1997, the death penalty remains part of the criminal law, making Cameroon one of only two countries in Central Africa – alongside the Democratic Republic of the Congo – to retain the death penalty in its legal system.

🔍 For this report, the teams visited 10 prisons and spoke to 45 people on death row and six prison staff members. Through the stories of those on death row, as well as their families and lawyers, the report highlights the flaws in Cameroon's criminal justice system and the harsh conditions of detention.

🌍 CONSTRUIRE LA SOLIDARITÉ INTERNATIONALE : RETOUR SUR LA MOBILISATION D’ECPM À LA RENCONTRE NATIONALE DES ACTEUR·ICES DU FESTISOL 🌎

Le 23 avril 2026, ECPM a participé à la Rencontre nationale des acteur·ices du Festisol, organisée par La Case et le CRID à l’Académie du Climat. Il s’agit d’un temps fort annuel qui rassemble les acteur⸱ices engagé⸱es dans l’éducation à la citoyenneté et à la solidarité internationale (ECSI).

Au cœur d’un village associatif dynamique, l’équipe du programme Éduquer a informé et sensibilisé les publics à l’abolition de la peine de mort, et plus largement, à la défense des droits humains.

💡 Ces moments d’échanges ont aussi permis de mettre en lumière un rendez-vous majeur à venir : le 9e Congrès mondial contre la peine de mort, organisé par ECPM.

🔴 JOINT STATEMENT : SAUDI ARABIA SURPASSES 2,000 EXECUTIONS UNDER KING SALMAN 🔴

Initiated by the European Saudi Organization for Human Rights (ESOHR), ECPM joins 37 other human rights organisations in calling for an immediate halt to executions in Saudi Arabia, where more than 2,000 executions have been carried out since King Salman’s accession in 2015.

📣 RÉPUBLIQUE DÉMOCRATIQUE DU CONGO : PLUS DE 480 CONDAMNATIONS À MORT EN 2024, SOIT UNE HAUSSE DE 300 % EN UN AN 📣

Pendant 11 mois, la nouvelle mission d’enquête menée par Ensemble contre la peine de mort (ECPM), et l’association congolaise Culture pour la paix et la justice (CPJ ASBL), a documenté une dégradation majeure de la situation des personnes condamnées à mort en RDC.

Plus de 270 personnes détenues dans une vingtaine de lieux de détention ont livré leurs témoignages, révélant des conditions inhumaines, des souffrances physiques et psychologiques, ainsi qu’une chaîne pénale défaillante.

Cette mission a été réalisée en partenariat avec la Coalition contre la peine de mort en RDC, (CCPM-RDC), les Réseaux des parlementaires, des avocats et des magistrats contre la peine de mort.

📣 DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO: OVER 480 DEATH SENTENCES IN 2024, A 300% INCREASE IN ONE YEAR 📣

Over a period of 11 months, the new fact-finding mission led by Ensemble contre la peine de mort (ECPM) and the Congolese association Culture pour la paix et la justice documented a significant deterioration in the situation of those sentenced to death in the DRC.

More than 270 prisoners held in around 20 detention centres gave their testimonies, revealing inhumane conditions, physical and psychological suffering, and a failing criminal justice system.

This mission was carried out in partnership with the Coalition Against the Death Penalty in the DRC (CCPM-RDC), as well as the Networks of Parliamentarians, Lawyers and Magistrates against the death penalty.
