☀️ This summer, we welcomed a talented group of students to our headquarters, bringing fresh perspectives, curiosity and energy to their internship experience.

Christine Næss and Gjermund Bjørnstad joined the Mechanical Department, where they explored how AI can support engineering workflows, with a particular focus on CAD and mechanical design. Along the way, they also gained hands-on experience in design for sustainability and maintenance of 3D printing systems. ⚙️🌱

A big thank you to Christine, Gjermund and all our summer interns for their valuable contributions and great efforts throughout the summer! 👏

💡 Today, the Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) starts applying across Europe.

The PPWR revises previous legislation around packaging and package waste across the European Union’s 27 Member States. It considers packaging’s entire life cycle, from design to post-consumer recovery, setting requirements for separate collection of single-use drink containers and recycled content. ♻️

It is one of the biggest changes to European packaging policy in decades. 🇪🇺 The PPWR aims to reduce the environmental impact of packaging waste and foster a circular economy. ♾️

♻️ A smooth return experience – a better customer experience. For many consumers, returning drink containers is not a separate task, it's the start of their shopping journey. 🍅🥖

Almost 9 in 10 shoppers who return containers use their deposit refund to shop in store, and nearly half return containers as part of their regular grocery trip.*

That means the reverse vending machines are more than a service point. It's often the first touchpoint of the store experience.

When container returns are quick and convenient, shoppers move seamlessly into the store. When the process is slow or frustrating, retailers risk losing both containers and purchases.

That's why reliable technology and fast support matter. An efficient, modern reverse vending solution helps create a better customer experience, smoother store operations, and a more positive shopping journey. ✅

Plastic pollution is often thought of as something we can see. But one of the biggest challenges is nearly invisible. 🔬 https://eu1.hubs.ly/H0wHGV40

Microplastics – tiny plastic particles measuring 5mm or less – are now found throughout our oceans, in marine animals, and even in the food chain. 🌊 The majority of this pollution doesn’t start at sea, but on land.

Addressing the problem therefore means looking upstream – at how we produce, use, and collect plastic before it becomes pollution.

At TOMRA, we believe that plastic is not waste, but a valuable resource. ♻️ Systems such as deposit return schemes help keep materials in circulation through recycling, and out of nature, preventing larger items from breaking down into microplastics in the first place.

Because when it comes to microplastics, the most effective solution is not removing them from the ocean – but stopping them from getting there at all. Learn more in the article above. ☝️

After a round of intense matches, we’ve officially crowned the champion for our annual ping pong tournament 🏓

This year’s title? Claimed by one of our summer interns. Christopher Chen is setting the bar high from day one, and has won endless bragging rights. 👏 At least until someone takes the trophy home.

It was great to see so many colleagues come together at our headquarters for some friendly competition, ice cream, and a fun break before summer.

Take a look at some of the highlights from the tournament 🎬

9,400,000 returns in 90 minutes ♻️ That’s how many bottles and cans were returned through TOMRA’s reverse vending machines, in the time it takes to play one football match.⚽

Good news, you don’t need to be a professional athlete and no stretching is required if you want to join the recycling game. Just a reverse vending machine and a simple habit.

Every bottle and can returned is a point for you, and a point for nature. 🌍

Every goal can change the game. But so can everyday habits. Because this is a game where everyone can score. And every return moves us closer to a world without waste.

Together we are building a winning team, one return at a time!

20 years of in Germany – and still setting the benchmark. 🇩🇪 https://eu1.hubs.ly/H0wcJZq0

Since its standardization in 2006, Germany’s deposit return scheme (DRS) has become the world's highest-performing system collecting single-use drink containers for recycling. Today, it delivers return rates of up to 98% for eligible beverage containers. ♻️

🌎 On today, it is worth pausing to think about everyday items we can take for granted. A bottle may seem small, but the journey it takes after use can make a real difference: https://eu1.hubs.ly/H0vVp8N0.

Plastic pollution and plastic waste are growing challenges, particularly in our oceans. 🌊 Around 80% of ocean plastic comes from sources on land, highlighting how important collection and recycling systems are in determining whether bottles are lost to the environment or kept in use.

Most beverage bottles are made from PET, a highly recyclable material. When PET bottles are collected through deposit return schemes and kept clean and separate, they can be recycled into recycled PET and used to make new bottles again, supporting bottle‑to‑bottle recycling and closed loops. ♾️

By returning PET bottles to TOMRA reverse vending machines for Clean Loop Recycling, those bottles can be part of a circular journey where resources are not wasted – but reused again and again. Learn more about recycled PET (rPET) in our popular article on the topic. ☝️

This World Environment Day, we remember that everyday actions, supported by the right systems, can help keep valuable materials out of nature and in the loop.
