π«π· La Marseillaise was written in 1792 by Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle during the French Revolution, when revolutionary France had just declared war on Austria and feared invasion from European monarchies trying to crush the revolution. Originally called βWar Song for the Army of the Rhine,β it later became known as La Marseillaise after volunteers from Marseille sang it while marching to Paris. The lyrics can sound very violent today but this is because it was written as a wartime call to arms, meant to mobilize citizens to defend a fragile new republic rather than as a peaceful patriotic anthem. π«π·
