Whether you are a professional driver or part time behind the wheel, practicing defensive driving can make a significant difference in ensuring your safety and the safety of others on the road.

- What is defensive driving?
Defensive driving is a set of techniques that allows drivers to anticipate and respond to potential hazards and dangerous situations on the road. By adopting a proactive mindset and being prepared for unexpected events, you can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and protect yourself and others from harm.
- Key principles of defensive driving:
1. Stay alert and focused: Avoid distractions such as mobile phones, eating, or multitasking. Keep your eyes on the road, scan for potential hazards, and maintain a clear mental state.
2. Follow traffic laws: Observe speed limits, traffic signals, and road signs. Adhering to the rules of the road reduces the chances of collisions and promotes a smooth flow of traffic.
3. Maintain a safe distance: Always keep a safe following distance(2 to 3 seconds) from the vehicle in front of you. This provides you with more time to react and avoid accidents if the car ahead suddenly stops or slows down.
4. Use your mirrors effectively: Regularly check your rearview and side mirrors to be aware of the surrounding vehicles. This helps you anticipate potential lane changes or maneuvers and react accordingly.
5. Predict and anticipate: Pay attention to the behavior of other drivers and anticipate their actions. Look for signs of aggressive or distracted driving and make adjustments to your own driving accordingly.
6. Practice patience and calmness: Stay composed in challenging situations and avoid aggressive behavior. Reacting with anger or frustration can escalate a potentially dangerous situation and put everyone at risk.
7. Plan ahead: Familiarize yourself with the road you are using, road conditions, and potential obstacles before starting your journey.
Knowing the road well allows you to make informed decisions and take appropriate actions when necessary.

Business-Risk Consulting / Stéphane Ostertag is thrilled to share the successful completion of three Road Safety Driver Training programs in Mali 🇲🇱 from June 22nd to 30th.

​Priority "​Empowering ​both ​drivers and diplomats​ at using armored vehicles​"

Our immersive training brought together 15 students, equipping them with essential skills in the complex​ ​and unpredictable​ road risks​ environments they navigate daily.

What did we focus on?

- Mastering Armored Vehicles: Going beyond just familiarization, we deliver ​a ​​thorough inspection and study on their vehicles, explaining them step by step how a light vehicle is up armored, showing them the different equipment between these vehicles and finally providing hands-on experience on how to expertly handle these ​heavy vehicles​ on the road.
- Road Safety & Defensive Driving: We drilled home the importance of proactive attitudes and the ability to foresee potential hazards​ by adopting safe attitudes and behaviors ​
- Evacuation Protocols: Understanding the what, when, and how of executing an efficient and safe evacuation during in-country crises.
- Convoy Driving Procedures: Highlighting the importance of disciplined and predictable behavior in convoy driving, with a contextualized approach.
- Vehicle Search Techniques: Training on systematic approaches for vehicle search, minimizing risk and maximizing safety.
- Awareness Driving in Insecure Settings: Practicing situational awareness in insecure environments, promoting safety-first driving.
- On-road Driver Assessment: Providing real-time feedback and constructive criticism to improve our students' on-road performance​ and driving behaviors ​

The urgency for such training is underscored by the recent rise in attacks on diplomatic missions and convoys, as seen in Nigeria and Sudan.

The escalating risks underline the paramount need for diplomats and ​staffs​ to master these unique skills, ensuring their safety while on the job​ in case local drivers are sick or perhaps unavailable.

Through the dedication of our students and the tireless work of our experienced trainers, we're doing our part to keep these ​staffs​ safe in uncertain conditions.

Sujet : Temps de réaction / distance de freinage

Que peut-on faire pour réduire le de réaction et la de freinage très facilement, quelque chose que nous pouvons tous appliquer au quotidien en conduisant ?

Le temps de réaction est la dynamique à l'intérieur de notre corps :
Comment cela fonctionne-t-il avec votre cerveau et physiquement avec vos bras et vos pieds 🦶 ?

Lorsque vous conduisez, vos yeux 👀 voient, transmettent à votre cerveau 🧠 qui recueille les informations de votre environnement direct, votre cerveau analyse en permanence et prend la décision instantanée d'articuler vos bras/mains qui maintiennent ou tournent le volant et vos jambes 🦵 qui appuient sur les freins grâce à vos muscles.

La technique utilisée s'appelle le "Pied-Frein" :

Réalisée par anticipation pendant la conduite, elle permettra au conducteur lors d'un freinage d'urgence ou d'un obstacle soudain de :
1. Réduire le temps de réaction
2. Réduire la distance parcourue pendant ce temps de réaction
3. Augmenter la puissance de freinage
4. Réduire la distance parcourue lors du freinage

Comment et quand dois-je le faire ?
En relâchant la pé**le d'accélérateur lorsque vous arrivez à une zone de préoccupation ou de danger (embouteillage, véhicule arrêté sur le côté, enfants jouant près de la route ou approche d'un virage sans bonne visibilité, etc.), tournez votre pied sur votre talon pour le poser sur la pé**le de frein afin d'anticiper au cas où vous auriez besoin d'appuyer sur les freins.

Cela aura un impact significatif sur la réduction des et des en éduquant les conducteurs à avoir une attitude et un comportement plus préventifs/sécuritaires au volant.

Résultats positifs :

En faisant cela, vous réduisez également la consommation de carburant (lors du relâchement de l'accélérateur) et l'usure prématurée des plaquettes et disques de frein en les utilisant par anticipation et non par réaction pour être plus efficace

Quelle est l'erreur la plus courante et le réflexe nécessaire oublié en conduisant sur la route ?

Oui, le contrôle de l'angle mort / le contrôle par-dessus l'épaule, tel que nous le définissons pour nos élèves.

Vous ne pouvez pas vérifier votre angle mort à l'aide de vos rétroviseurs, vous devez donc vérifier votre angle mort en tournant la tête par-dessus votre épaule (droite ou gauche) pour vérifier qu'il n'y a pas d'objet ou de véhicule/moto etc. dans cette zone qui n'est pas visible avec vos rétroviseurs.

Quand devez-vous faire ce contrôle ?

- Chaque fois que vous changez la position de votre véhicule sur la route.
- Lorsque vous quittez votre position d'attente/de stationnement.
- En fait, vous devez garder un œil sur l'environnement de votre véhicule à 360°.
