FYI
TCFA: Invest Area 94W: Near Yap & Palau
Saturday, Oct 29, 2022, Valid at 12:00 PM ChST Prepared by: Landon Aydlett, WCM
INVEST 94W – TROPICAL CYCLONE FORMATION ALERT: The tropical disturbance, Invest Area 94W, over Yap State the last few days continues a slow, westward trek toward Yap Proper and Palau. Overnight, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center upgraded this disturbance to “High” for development, also known as a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert. This means that development into a tropical depression is likely within the next 24 hours. Earlier this morning, 94W was centered near 9N140E, or just east of Yap Proper, with a slow, westward drift.
94W remains a poorly-organized disturbance, characterized by diurnal peaks and lulls in activity. Midday satellite animation shows a couple clusters of deep convection (heavy showers and thunderstorms), primarily south and southwest of the low-level circulation center (LLCC). The LLCC remains exposed at this time due to northerly shear in the upper atmosphere. The ongoing shear will work to mitigate significant development in the near-term. However, keep a close watch on weather forecasts and conditions as the weather event evolves. Gale force wind gusts are possible this weekend across western Yap State, and across Palau early in the coming week. Expect periods of heavy showers and thunderstorms as this system pushes through the region.
