The German South Seas, 480,000 inhabitants. Germany bought in 1899 for the compensation of $ 4.5 million and incorporated the area into German New Guinea. If we can save Sylt, a rich Island in Germany from rising sea level, why not a former German colony too. Today the country is a victim of rising sea levels and resettlement is the result. Germany must live up to its historical responsibility. To date, Micronesia has no embassy in Morocco or Germany. Germany itself does not have an embassy in Micronesia either. Whoever occupies a country and exploits it has to face the consequences a hundred years later. In addition to the genocide of the Herero and Nama, Germany still has a lot on the post-colonial score.
Today the telephone directory in Micronesia is full of German names: Thieme, Stützner, Keil and others - descendants of German colonialists and local womens. The german federal government must open an embassy and get more involved into the rescue of the Islands against the rising sea levels. Gruppo 2 al torneo del continente oceanico

Davvero una bella sfida oggi:

POHNPEI ❤: uno dei 4 Stati Federati di Micronesia. Posto fra Chuuk e Kosrae, comprende numerose isole dell'arcipelago delle Caroline.
Capoluogo: Kolonia.

NUOVA CALEDONIA 😆: collettività francese d'oltremare situata nell'oceano Pacifico sudoccidentale vicino all'Australia.
Capitale: Numea.

Big cleanup at Langer Island today. Langer was the Japanese sea plane base, before runways in Pohnpei. The island was a big military base for the Japanese until the end of the Second World War. It is loaded with tunnels, bunkers, cannons, water and fuel tanks, a hangar and lots of bomb craters. After the Second World War it was used for sea planes until the early 70’s when the existing runways was opened for operation. Thanks to all government offices and private business who helped and the USA Embassy who organized the clean up.
The Pohnpei Report II for my friends abroad to the best of my recollection.
It was a beautiful Good Friday in Pohnpei. Feels like a change of season here. Finally winds are giving us a break into some perfect boating conditions with green seas and blue skies. For these last weeks felt like doomsday weather to go along with everything that is happening. Gray skies, gray seas, windy conditions. Well, at least this has changed.
On the other front, as far as I can tell, no one is allowed back into Pohnpei, not even locals, Pohnpeians or any kind of residents. Only medical filed workers or government people can return to Pohnpei and then go into a 14 days quarantine on one of the designated locations. There will be two rescue United flights next week but only to take people away from Pohnpei, back home. Crew from the planes can only get out to inspect the aircraft. The crew cannot go near the terminal or engage with anyone here. Ships have to stay off shore or have very restrictive rules on how to dock or unload. I see small patrol boats from the Port Authority going back and forth making sure no one is sneaking out of the few ships in the lagoon anchorage.
Looks to me like it is works because of as today, there are no cases in Micronesia.
For most of it life looks quite normal, except for closed schools and a few business that closed or almost closed (like us). Shops, supermarkets, gas stations, container stores, utilities and most restaurants are operational, in some cases with shorter work hours.
Some hotels are closed (no guests at all) and some hotels still open as they are hosting people who got stranded here.
This week two food supplie ships and the fuel ship came in to unload, so we are stocked ok for now.
I see a small decrease in the number of cars on the street but still a good number of people going on with their daily lives. Had to do some work at the government offices this week and all were totally operational.
I have also been to Joy hotel for our favorite Joy Lunch and all seemed moral. Not a packed restaurant but keeping busy.
Every afternoon a crew of regulars usually meet at Mangrove for a few beers (keeping our social distancing).
I feel like when it all went down a few weeks ago lots of business shut down and people were scared and staying home. As time passes looks to me like people are getting on with their lives and some business that closed at first are now reopening, both taking the proper precautions (or not!).
As today we are free to roam and we hope it stays like this until the end of this mess.
As for myself and some of our crew, we still going, working and trying to enjoy life. I don’t want to encourage anyone to do the same if they are in a different situation, but here, I am feeling safe, being cautious and doing what we love.

Best hotel, boats, staff. Ad some great local knowledge for your best Pohnpei Experience. Please che We never closed during covid. Business was down 99.9% but what else could we do?

We continue to enjoy Pohnpei, and every now and then we found someone to join his for a ride. Yes, Pohnpei is opening, or open by the time you read this. Like many other places around the world, lots of business closed. In Pohnpei it was mostly bars, restaurants and tour operations. We are still here doing what we love, and doing it everyday with or without guests, because thats what we do. Welcome back!

Nauru flights are back to Pohnpei flying in from Brisbane. Bi weekly flights at under ad$2,000

16/10/2022

It’s been two years and eight month since The last flight from Australia landed in Pohnpei. Yesterday, Sunday, touched down in Pohnpei returning today, Monday to Brisbane on a bi weekly flight. It’s a start and a second option.

10/10/2022

Things are slowly changing. One flight from Australia every two weeks and no more need of a booster shot, but still needs to be vaccinated to enter the country. Please read bellow and let’s not start a vaccination comments war. COVID-19 Booster Doses No Longer Required for Travel into the FSM; All FSM States Fully Open for Interstate & International Travel
-----
PALIKIR, October 10th 2022 (FSMIS)—On October 10th, 2022, His Excellency David W. Panuelo—President of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM)—signed an Amendment to the Permanent Regulation Implementing Public Law 22-134 i.e. the Healthy Border Protection Act. The practical effect of the Amendment is that any person traveling to the FSM, although still required to be “fully vaccinated” against COVID-19 prior to entry into the FSM, no longer requires a booster dose prior to travel under any circumstance.

Per Public Law 22-134, i.e. the Healthy Border Protection Act, persons intending to travel to the FSM are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. A person is considered “fully vaccinated” after they have received the second dose of an mRNA vaccine, such as the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines, or the single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. As of October 10th, 2022, all of the FSM’s States—Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae—are fully open for interstate and international travel.

After booking one’s ticket on an international commercial carrier, a prospective traveler to the FSM can expect to show documentary evidence of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 when checking in at the airport; additionally, the traveler can expect to complete a Health Declaration Form whilst on the aircraft. Presuming the traveler declares they are not showing any symptoms consistent with COVID-19, then at no point prior, during, or after travel does the traveler need to provide a COVID-19 test result. At no point is the traveler required to undergo any form of quarantine or restricted movement.

Finally one more option to travel to Pohnpei from Australia. Nauru Airline will start to fly Brisbane to Pohnpei October 16th. Based on information I got so far it will be one round trip flight every two weeks. Your other best option is to book tickets separately (leg by leg) from Sydney to Honolulu (I think everyday of the week) and then book a Honolulu to Pohnpei on United Airlines Island Hopper (every other day) UA 134 and UA 152.
My guess is any of the options will be running at around $3,000.
The Airlines are keeping Pohnpei more exclusive than any other destination in the world.

Most beaches in Pohnpei are underwater, just a few feet underwater.

Covid has arrived in Pohnpei. It was probably one of the last places on earth to be covid free.

14/07/2022

At the size most waves in the world start getting fun, around 6 ft, Pohnpei starts to get scary. At least for 90% of the surfers. Lucky for the 90% (me included/no discrimination) these days only happen a few days a year when the 10% will show up to enjoy it. By the way this 6 ft wave is around double to triple overhead.

Here is a different angle of Nan Madol. It is hard to get a really good picture of Nan Madol as usually the dark gray colors of the rocks blends in with the jungle backgorund that has grown mostly everywhere around the ruins. On the background a chain of untouched islands on the barrier reef to a channel on the right that gives access to Nan Madol from the open ocean to the laggon and to Nan Madol. It is a shallow channel that will close out on any south swell bigger than 4 ft high. The furthest tip of those island is the Eastern most tip of Pohnpei. To the left you are facing the North and to the right you are facing the South. On the right day one of my most favorite places to be in Pohnpei. On the wrong day a navagation hazard. This entire area is a amazing playground for all kinds of activities. Diving, Fishing, Snorkeling, Surfing, a World Heritage Site by Unesco and one Marine protected area. On a day with weather conditions like this I would not know where to start. I am not sure who shot this picture. I found it on Facebook so sorry for no creadit.

Another beautiful Sunday in Pohnpei. Get out there!!!!

27/04/2022

It was a long two years of isolation. Going through my videos I saw this one, which I have no idea of when it happened, as I have no recollection of any waves I surfed even when I see a pic or video of the ride. I think I am going crazy! Feels like a kaleidoscope of rainy windy weeks, beautiful days, working mornings and drifting around all afternoon not knowing what to do, sitting at the bar with the same guys every afternoon for two years. I see changes ahead. Maybe a semi normal life again by the end of the year? I hope so

23/04/2022

Late Earth Day. Should be everyday anyways.

13/04/2022

Happy upcoming Easter!!!

Photos from Pohnpei Surf Club's post 11/04/2022

One thing I really like about Pohnpei, it is really easy to get away from civilization. It’s a good walk up to Sokehs. It is never that easy for me and getting harder as I get older and lazy. I didn’t see a single soul around today. The view always pays off.

10/04/2022

Foam ball spitters. Have you ever seen a wave do this back to back?

09/04/2022

For a lot of people this is a horrible day at sea. The boat is rocking, you getting splashed, maybe sea sick, it’s cloudy followed by a torrential white out rain squalls. For others it’s heaven. Can you identify the two different kinds of fish chasing bait?

Pohnpei things.

How do you want to spend your day? A few options here! Thanks to all who jumped in the Flash Sale! That really helped us in these over two years with pretty much ZERO business activity.
We made it and there is a lot of light at the end of this tunnel. Thanks all! A few notes from the Flash Sale. Except for one surfer, all who jumped in were Americans for two reasons. With borders still closed there is no easy way to fly to Pohnpei from Australia. Air Niugini, who flew round trips as cheap as US$600 from Australia to Pohnpei a few years back, stopped flying here during the shutdown but should resume flights once borders reopen. Second, as today you need to be fully jabbed to enter Micronesia which seems to be a bigger issue with our Australian surfers (not taking sides here, just saying). Hopefully this is also dropped in the near future. On another note, something I mentioned here many times, rooms will fill up really fast. Bookings are coming in mostly from people who had other business on island then surfing, but have been stuck abroad for close to three years by the time they fully reopen. If you are coming from Hawaii or America and intend to spend your next vacation here, lock in your days now!

03/04/2022

The borders to Pohnpei should reopen soon and YOU should take advantage of our Last Ever Fash Sale rates!
Rates that are cheaper than our early season rates from 5 years ago!!! And let's not talk about increasing fuel rates in Micronesia!!!

In a press release this week, President Panuelo advised that “It remains the intention of the FSM National Government to fully open the Nation’s borders sometime in August, 2022”.
Even if it takes a bit longer we will still be on time for surf season 2022/23.

Our Flash sale will go from March 28th to April 3rd.
Pick your days or buy credit to book later (but we really recommend you to book your days as soon as possible).
US$189 per night per person to be paid in full by April 3rd.
Your booking will include airport transfers, shared double room accommodation on the best location in town, everyday boat rides to the surf, island tours, boat snacks.
Private room rates available by request.

The Flash Sale days are to be used between October 2022 to April 2023, unless new restrictions are put in place.
In that case credit will be extended.
Only 100 nights will be pre-sold on this sale on a first come first serve basis.

For more information please message us here or email us at [email protected].

Good morning Pohnpei. There is more than surf to be seen and enjoyed on island. Don’t miss our last days of the Flash Sale for season 2922/23.

Our Story

I remember the first time I stepped foot on island, just over 16 years ago. It was everything I dreamed about a surfing, fishing, diving destination. Pristine, untouched, uncrowded. On the other hand it was hard for a visitors like me to get around and see the sites I wanted. There were a few operations catering for divers, mostly Japanese but when I tried to get out to the surf, they didn’t know anything about it and it wasn’t cheap. Back in the day it was the cheap, unreliable panga boat that did the job when it showed up, and came back on time, when it didn’t break. Things have changed a bit within these 16 years. You get to Pohnpei and we get you to the spot as fast as you can get ready. From when cell phones had just started in 2000 to island wide G4 wireless phone and internet connection. The rooms are new and comfortable overlooking Sokehs Bay and the surf at a distance. Access to the surf and dive spots are done by a good and reliable fleet of boats moored steps from your rooms. The Sushi Bar and Grill is also located steps from your room on an oceanfront location surrounded by a fish pond. To top everything great staff, best local knowledge on knowing where and when to go. For us it is more like a hobby then a job. We enjoy doing it. As for the island, there are not many places like Micronesia left in the world. I could say lots of good things but the main one that attracted me was isolation, lack of visitors and uncrowded conditions. Ad some clear, warm, green/blue water, perfect surf, not another boat in sight on the dive spots. Next stop light, 1,000 miles away. For those who take that extra step, the rewards awaits you.
