Roll call! ✅ We're thrilled that all our schools now have in-person attendance, providing face-to-face opportunities to learn more about God's love ❤️

Our kids in the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) are back to school this month. #delap and #laura on Majuro began classes online in early September and met face-to-face today. #ebeye began at home with instructional packets last week and attended in-person classes today.

In the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), our SDA school on #pohnpei welcomed students to their first day of school last week. #kosrae and #yap began their classes at the end of August.

Praise God for the ministry of our teachers!

Islands are BACK TO SCHOOL during COVID-19 😷 with a greater need of TEACHERS 🙋🏻‍♀

Remember the impact COVID had on schools around the world? Our islands are no different.

These images may have become routine to most of the world, but face masks, mitigation plans, and online classrooms are new to our schools.

The staff on each island has prepared tirelessly to open their schools in the new COVID environment.

Now that COVID is a reality in Micronesia and the Marshall Islands, our SDA school staff is working overtime to give students the best education with the least disruption possible. They could use the aid of more Student Missionaries (SMs).

Much of the staff was already in overdrive during the last two years — keeping our schools running with less help — first due to border closures prohibiting SMs in 2020, then due to extensive and expensive quarantines limiting SMs in 2021.

✅ NOW that the islands have lifted travel restrictions in 2022, it is easier for volunteers to come.
✅ NOW with the additional burden of COVID protocols, there is an even greater need for help.
✅ NOW is the TIME TO GO visit gmmsda.org/positions, so you can help our islands get back to school!

📚 Here's to a new school year! We are praying for the staff, students, and families of our 11 schools across Guam-Micronesia Mission of Seventh-day Adventists .

This month, teachers welcomed students back to Palau Mission Academy, Palau SDA Elementary, Saipan Seventh-day Adventist, Guam Adventist Academy, and Chuuk Seventh-day Adventist School.

Due to Covid-19 community transmission this summer in the FSM (Federated States of Micronesia) and the RMI (Republic of the Marshall Islands), many of our schools have had to postpone their first day of classes.

In the FSM, Pohnpei Seventh-day Adventist School plans to begin September 5th, with Kosrae Seventh-day Adventist School and Yap Seventh-day Adventist School hoping to open soon.

In the RMI, Ebeye SDA School, Delap SDA School, and Laura SDA Elementary School are tentatively set to start in October.

We trust that the Lord is in control and have faith that He will make a way for a safe, successful school year! 🙏

How it’s going vs. How it started

It has been said, “When one teaches, two learn” (Robert Heinlein).

We asked some SMs what they have learned while teaching so far:

Delilah Drew, Kindergarten & 1st grade teacher, Yap Seventh-day Adventist School
“Teacher, teacher, teacher!!”- my kids for what seems like 24/7. No one prepared me for the amount of random questions a first grader is capable of asking. No one prepared me for the number of times I’d be asked to watch as my students do somersaults for the fourth day in a row.

It’s easy to get annoyed but there’s a post I saw on Facebook a couple weeks back that stuck with me and put things into perspective.

Paraphrased, it goes like this:

The things we’ve been seeing and experiencing for years are all brand new to them. WATCH them jump up and down 20+ times because they didn't know they could do that before. LOOK at the things they point out and bring to you because they’ve never seen it before. ANSWER their questions because they never knew those things before.

These past couple of months teaching have taught me many things but, most importantly, to take the time to listen to the wild stories Silas wants to tell me about his pet pig, watch as Gamalyo does a running somersault...again, and appreciate Caleb’s “innovative and revolutionary” new dance moves.

Darren is the PE teacher at Yap Seventh-day Adventist School. Here he is walking through a village to attend 'Yap Day' with his friend, Isaac. Yap Day is a celebration of Yapese culture with local dance, food, and activities.

He says: "Yap is amazing. It’s not as well known, but that makes it really unique. The people are absolutely the best part. They tend to be a bit quiet, until you get to know them. Then they are the most fun, lively people you’ll meet. And they have such a rich culture. The students are rowdy, loyal, and loving. To top it off, it’s legit the most beautiful place I have ever been, so that doesn’t hurt."
Retirees: A Micronesia Mission Adventure Awaits!
written by James Standish

“I thought God was done using me after teaching for 34 years,” says Belinda Ennes, “but instead He’s given me the greatest adventure of my life!” Belinda is serving as principal at the Adventist school on the tropical island of Yap in the Pacific Ocean.

Yap is best known for the gentle, massive manta rays that glide through its crystal clear waters, it’s ancient use of huge stone coins for currency and its rich WWII history. “Yap has vastly exceeded my expectations,” says Belinda, “except that there aren’t any dangerous animals...” she laughs, “I thought that went with the territory!”

“I love the children and their culture. On Yap no one cares about status symbols, no kids are coming to school with iPhones and as for school shootings - we don’t have guns on the island. It’s very different in so many ways from the inner city school I served at for fourteen years before retiring at 70 years old. And yet there are similarities. The kids here, just like in urban America, are desperately searching for a sense of hope. Being able to give them that hope through faith in Jesus Christ is the most satisfying part of my life here.”

Yap is part of the Federated States of Micronesia, an independent nation with very close ties to the US. Islanders have the right to live and work in the US, they use US currency and the nation enjoys a security arrangement with America. “The close ties to the US makes living and working here simple for Americans,” states Belinda. “I applied through Adventist Volunteer Services on a Wednesday and received a call the next Sunday from Yap informing me I’d be the principal. Three months later I was in meetings in Honolulu with the other principals from our schools spread across Micronesia.”

“I love that our teachers are primarily Student Missionaries. They are the most wonderful, positive, dedicated young people you can imagine,” observes Belinda. “My job is to empower and mentor them. I sincerely appreciate the love and respect I’m shown in return.”

Belinda’s closeness with the Student Missionaries makes sense when you learn she is only here because of one of them. “It’s all my granddaughter’s fault,” Belinda chuckles with a twinkle in her bright blue eyes. “I helped her through Adventist schools and to an Adventist college. She is the only Adventist among my grandchildren, and I’ve seen what a difference Adventist education has made in her life. She came as a Student Missionary to Micronesia and encouraged me to apply. It’s because of her I’m here.”

Leah Lauzon from Port Heron, Michigan, is in her second year as a student missionary in Yap. “Ms. Ennes, by her example of how she interacts with the students and with us, has inspired me to change my plans from being a graphic designer to becoming a teacher. She’s shown me that teaching is about getting close to kids, building relationships and helping them in life, it’s not just about education, it’s about their salvation as well. She has shown us every day through her example of what it is to be an Adventist Educator.”

Nathan Moravetz, who knew Leah at Camp Au Sable before they came to Yap, agrees. “We need retirees here because they have experience and they come here with a real sense of mission. Ms. Ennes is so dedicated and she has a passion for young people. We really need her experience. She also provides a family atmosphere that we deeply appreciate. We SMs have energy but we lack experience. She blesses us with her wealth of experience.”

Belinda, who retired to Gentry, Arkansas to be near her two sisters and her brother, has breathed life and direction into the school. Two of her siblings have come to Yap for a small taste of the adventure and to support her. “Serving on Yap has been a blessing for all of us,” says Belinda.

“I used to sit in church hearing mission stories and thinking that one day, I’d like to do mission service,” continues Belinda. “But life went on, and I thought I was too old. I guess God didn’t think so, because, here I am and I love it.”

“We are sincerely thankful that God sent Belinda to Yap,” says Arne Nielsen, VP of Education for the North American Division. “Her experience and kindness are more valuable to us than she could ever imagine.”

If you are a retired educator or you have the skills to renovate buildings, and God isn’t quite done with you yet, why not answer His call for the adventure of mission in Micronesia? You will be loved, respected, and needed every day you are here. And, after a day sharing the love of Christ with the families of Yap, there’s always the lure of a swim with the manta rays or a hike through the jungle to find downed fighter planes from WWII. God may have a mission adventure waiting for you in Micronesia. Just visit: https://www.adventistvolunteers.org/ and apply today.

Here are some highlights of our school program as love poured out for Kirsten.

19/11/2018
19/11/2018

The students were happy, the student missionary teachers and other staff were proud of their class productions’ and all the hard work that had been done. It was a good day! Kirsten’s memory was honored and treasured in the hearts of all who knew her. And for those of us who did not, we know the sacrifice that a student missionary and her/his parents make to serve our master The King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, in a far away country. So for this we honored and thank her and her family!

As we leave another year behind in the memory of Kirsten we Thank God for His grace, the rain and the rainbow, and we ask Him to continue to rain down His blessings on our school and everyone who helped to make this day a success.
