In Matar, Wanthoa Woreda of Ethiopia, thousands of South Sudanese refugees are living in unimaginable conditions. Families who fled from government bombings and violence back home are now stranded under the open sky, without proper shelter. Every day, heavy rains soak their few belongings, and at night, mothers and children sleep in the cold, unprotected.

Hunger is another silent killer. With no food to eat, many go to bed starving. Children, who should be in school, are instead fighting for survival. On top of this, diseases like malaria are spreading rapidly, leaving the already vulnerable community even weaker.

What is most painful is the silence of the world. The very government that should protect its citizens is the one bombing and displacing them. Yet, the United Nations and the wider international community remain passive. Their inaction is costing innocent lives.

We cannot look away. I am calling on the UN, international NGOs, humanitarian organizations, and all people of conscience to rise to this crisis. These refugees are not numbers they are human beings, fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters whose only crime is being caught in a war they did not choose.

The people of South Sudan in Matar desperately need shelter, food, medicine, and protection. The time for action is now. Tomorrow may be too late.
