Oh how we love you, "Dance at Bougival" ✨
One of Renoir's most ambitious and beloved works, this painting was executed in the studio but captures with delightful immediacy a sunny afternoon.
The open-air cafés of Bougival, a town on the Seine outside Paris, were popular recreation spots for city dwellers, including the Impressionists. Here, at one such café, an amateur boatman in a straw hat sweeps his stylish partner along in a waltz. The touch of their gloveless hands and the flush in the girl’s cheek suggest an amorous subtext to this suburban scene.
