Spain is going slower with its coronavirus deescalation process than its European neighbors. The pace is deliberate, as the government is wary of a new spike in transmissions in one of the world’s hardest hit countries.

The provinces of Malaga and Granada will move into Phase One of the Spanish government's plan to gradually scale down its coronavirus restrictions on Monday 18 May.

The two areas, which include the Costa del Sol and the Costa Tropical now join the other six Andalusian provinces which took a step closer to the post-coronavirus 'new normal' at the beginning of this week.

The move means that many of the current coronavirus lockdown restrictions will be relaxed. Social contact will be permitted in groups of up to ten people, respecting distances, and bars and restaurants will be able to open their pavement terraces, but with more space between tables.

The decision was announced on Friday afternoon after a new report submitted by the regional government concerning the two provinces' eligibility to move into the new phase was studied by the ministry of Health.

Phase 1 means that finally people will be able to see their friends and families, have a drink outside a bar or visit the local shops without an appointment.

Places of worship will also be able to reopen, but with only a third of their total capacity.

Movement around the entire province will also be permitted.

Groups of up to ten relatives and friends will be allowed to get together in a private home or on an outdoor terrace of a restaurant, bar or cafeteria or in another public space.

An exception is that people should not visit elderly people or others who belong to a high-risk group.

When people get together they will have to keep a distance of two metres between them, comply with hygiene rules, washing hands frequently.

Bars will only be able to serve half as many tables as before in their usual terrace area and tables must be disinfected between customers.

Hotels and self-catering tourist accommodation may open but not their communal areas and facilities.

Shops and small businesses covering less than 400 square metres may now open to the public without appointment, but up to 30 per cent of total capacity. Shops will have to be disinfected twice a day and a two-metre distance respected between customers.

Large shopping centres won't be able to open until the next phase.

Cultural events may be held in the open air with up to 200 people providing sufficient spaces can be left between seats. Cultural events indoors are limited to 30 people, and no more than 30 per cent of the premises' normal capacity.

Spain to introduce 14-day quarantine for international travelers

Traveler's coming to Spain from abroad will have to self-quarantine for 14 days, according to a new Health Ministry order published on Tuesday in the Official State Gazette(BOE).

The quarantine requirements for traveler's go into effect this coming Friday, May 15, and will remain in force throughout the duration of the state of alarm, which is due to end on May 24. If the emergency state is extended for another two weeks, the travel restrictions will continue to apply.

Spain is following in the footsteps of many other European countries that have introduced 14-day quarantines for traveler's entering their territory. In Spain, until now, this isolation period had only been applied to repatriated Spaniards and residents of Spain traveling from Italy. Starting on Friday, the same rule will apply to all international traveler's, with a few exceptions.

According to the government, “the favourable evolution of the epidemiological situation” and the start of the deescalation process “make it necessary to reinforce control measures" based on the global distribution of the virus and the principle of precaution.

Dear Owners,

As part of our vacation family, you’re at the heart of what we do. The past few months have challenged us all in new ways. As we’ve responded to the unprecedented situation and impacts of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), we’ve continued to modify and adjust global resort operations and implement temporary modifications to cancellation policies to help you focus on what’s most important right now: taking care of yourself and those closest to you. After all, that’s what your vacations are about.

Specifically, in relation to our resorts in Spain, on Tuesday 28th April, the Spanish Government announced a plan to gradually relax confinement measures until a "new normal" is reached. The plan sets out a series of phases each with certain criteria which must be met before each measure is relaxed. For example, tourist accommodation in each region of Spain could start to accept guests from within that region as part of phase 1 of the plan. Phase 2 could involve the limited reopening of on-site services like bars and restaurants. All dates in the plan are indicative and can apply to each region of Spain separately.

Please note that movement of persons for non-essential reasons will be allowed progressively over time and will initially be restricted to movement within provinces. From Monday 11th May, we currently expect to be able to accept arrivals from the Malaga province only, and the severe restrictions applicable to resort amenities are currently expected to remain in place until at least Monday 8th June. Please note these dates may change subject to the criteria for each phase of the plan being met.

At the resort, the following measures remain in place to follow the Spanish Government’s guidance and regulations and to limit health risks to our Owners, associates, and guests:
Cancellation of all reservations for arrival during the State of Alarm, for its current duration;
Closure of all swimming pools;
Closure of spas, hot tubs, and saunas;
Closure of fitness centers, activity rooms, and kids’ clubs;
Closure of golf courses;
Closure of food and beverage outlets;
Elimination of gatherings of Owners/guests and cancellation of all activities;
Elimination of daily tidy housekeeping services (linens and amenities will be provided upon request);
Elimination of all other housekeeping services; and
Reduction of on-site staffing to minimal levels.

Based on the above, and in continued support of governmental efforts to curtail the spread of COVID-19, we are writing today to strongly encourage you to consider cancelling your upcoming reservation if you have a reservation that is arriving prior to June 8th 2020. Should you wish to change or cancel your upcoming reservation, you will also find a link on the Hub to the Marriott Vacation Club® website where you can make expedient changes to your reservation.

Due to the unprecedented circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 situation, Marriott Vacation Club has made arrangements for those Owners that cancel their upcoming reservation within 60-days of arrival to receive an Interval International® week that will be deposited into your Interval International account within the next 45 days for future use. The Interval International week will have a reduced exchange rate of $99, will allow you to check availability up to 120 days prior to your desired travel date, and will expire on December 16, 2021.
