Our Desert Garden is inspired by four plants that appear across centuries of Egyptian history and art.

The Date Palm can be found in New Kingdom tomb paintings, including the Tomb of Paser, where it was depicted as an essential part of life along the Nile. The Fig Tree was cultivated throughout Ancient Egypt and frequently recorded in botanical illustrations and historical accounts of the Mediterranean world.

The Incense Tree traces back to Queen Hatshepsut’s famous expedition to the Land of Punt in the 15th century BCE, when living frankincense and myrrh trees were brought to Egypt and planted at her temple in Deir el-Bahari. The Pomegranate, introduced to Egypt during the New Kingdom, later became a recurring motif in Coptic textiles, appearing in woven artworks from Late Antique Egypt.

Together, these plants tell a story of trade, cultivation, and artistic expression—reflecting how Egypt’s gardens were shaped by both the land itself and centuries of cultural exchange.
