Did you know, if one of your parents is an inventor, you can inherit that too?

That's according to research from University of Mannheim, Business School - Fakultät BWL, Copenhagen Business School, and Università Bocconi.

They found that having parents who were inventors increased the probability of first-born daughters also becoming inventors, but only if they did not have a second-born brother.

The presence of a younger brother limited the extent to which an older sister benefitted from parental knowledge and skills, discussions of career plans, and access to parental networks.

Pension funds potentially have an important role to play in financing companies’ growth. Using detailed data from , this column shows a positive effect of pension fund investment on firm productivity which tends to increase with the size of the investment in the firm and the length of its duration. Privately held benefit more from pension fund investments than publicly listed firms. Finally, also help companies improve innovation activities. WHAT STUDY GROUP TYPE ARE YOU? 🤓

For some students the study group is someone you study with. That’s it. For others it’s the ones you share your personal thoughts with, cook dinner with and the ones you snap first in the morning. Some of you get to choose your own groups, other have them appointed. In both cases it’s a great way to meet someone new in your programme.

Whether your relationship with your study group will turn out as Maria’s or not, you will gain the most from it when everyone’s on the same page. That may take a little work. Therefore, we have gathered some good advice on how get the best out of your group work: https://studentcbs.sharepoint.com/sites/UNIverse/SitePages/en/Get-the-best-out-of-team-work.aspx 🪐

BUILD CONNECTIONS BEYOND THE CLASSROOM 🤩

Getting to know new people takes a bit of effort. For some it’s easy, for others it feels a bit more like a challenge. At CBS we facilitate events where you can meet other students across programmes, so there are plenty of opportunities to expand your social circle at uni. But, just like Martin, you have to make an effort yourself. We promise it will be worth it.

This morning we welcomed all our new bachelor students to CBS with our Bachelor Kick Off 🤩

We started out with a speech from our President Nikolaj Malchow-Møller. The speech has numerous messages, we think are important to all students. Therefore, we’ll share it here:

“You’ll never walk alone …

This is the title of my favourite song. Not only because it is the anthem of Liverpool FC. But also because it carries an extremely important message. I will get back to that in a minute…

But before I do that, I would like to welcome all of you to this Bachelor Kick Off here at CBS.

I have really been looking forward to this day. And so have you, I hope.
Because here you are. In a new place. For some of you in a new country. With new fellow students around you. And new professors waiting in the classrooms.
So, I understand if you feel a bit nervous and maybe even alone. You may think: Am I smart enough? Interesting enough? Will anybody like me? These questions might even overshadow your excitement and joy.

You belong to a generation which is met with extremely high expectations. By others and by yourself.

Politicians have great hopes for you. You are to solve ¬all our problems. Tackle the climate crisis, figure out the digital transformation, and bring peace to our world.

While you are being evaluated and assessed. By others and by yourself.

TikTok and Instagram project an ideal that no human being can live up to: Endless pictures and videos from friends – and strangers – always enjoying life and always posing with big smiles and happy lives.

It’s a lot to place on the shoulders of a generation. Much more than I had on my shoulders when I started as a student at Aarhus University – on this day exactly 30 years ago.

So, it’s understandable that you may feel both insecure and eager to perform. You are used to push harder, reach higher, do better — trying to be perfect.

And it is ok to have ambitions. And wanting to perform. But no one is perfect. Not even Jürgen Klopp – the manager of Liverpool.

You only succeed by being part of a community. Exactly what we want for you here at CBS.

Which leads me back to Liverpool and “You’ll never walk alone”.

The song was written back in 1945 for a musical about two lovers. It was never written for a football team. Or for a university…

But today I want you to bear in mind that you will never walk alone here at CBS. When you chose to join us, you didn't just sign up for an education. You became part of a community.

During the next five years (or more), you will enhance your personal skills, explore your individual passions, and take your first steps on your new journey.

But university is much more than that.

University is meaningful conversations with fellow students in the cafeteria between lectures. It is study sessions that turn into socializing at Nexus. University is the collaborative projects that challenge your ideas, perspectives and beliefs. University is building memories and experiences that will stay with you throughout your life.
I'm not claiming it will be easy.

Communities, you see, do not just spring into existence out of thin air. They are not separate from the individuals who make them up. They require each of us to contribute to their creation.

And the community at CBS will require your courage, your curiosity, and your commitment.

In class, you will have to risk a part of yourself. You have to show what you can figure out and what you can't. Stepping out of your comfort zone and expressing your ideas, even if they differ from the majority, takes courage.

Wanting to showcase your knowledge and expertise can be tempting, but remember to ask questions, lend an ear to others, and admit when you're uncertain about something. Curiosity is your guide to valuable dialogues, continuous learning, and compassionate communities.

There will be days where you feel like you don't have a lot to contribute. But here's the thing: we're not giving our communities the credit they deserve if we think we should only participate when we are on a roll. When we can impress and shine. If we only share our tears with our pillow or our therapist, we are not using the strength that comes from being committed to a community.

As my favourite anthem goes: “When you walk through a storm, hold your head up high, and don’t be afraid of the dark.”

And never walk alone. Walk together. Even if it is not always an easy task.

I wish you all the best here at CBS.”

Once again, welcome to CBS 😍

BEING A STUDENT AT CBS MEANS BEING PART OF A COMMUNITY 🥰

Studying is so much more than going to and preparing for classes. It’s collaborating and helping each other become better – and sometimes it’s sharing frustrations when a text is really difficult.

Whether you find studying easy or you struggle at times, we all benefit from different views and different ways of learning. In the world of CBS, you’re not alone; reach out to your study group, to other students and to your professors. We’re all in this together.

DISCOVER YOUR PLACE AT CBS 🏫

Starting university is huge. New surroundings, new expectations and new people. How do you fit in?

Take a look around at your fellow students. Some are wearing suits, others ripped jeans. You’re all different, but you also have a lot in common. The students on your programme share some of your interests, and are completely unlike you in other areas. This way you both enrich and challenge each other and that is what makes great students.

At CBS, we don't seek conformity – we thrive on authenticity. Your voice, your experiences, and your viewpoints matter. In fact, it's the blend of different perspectives that empowers us to confront society's challenges head-on. Yes, that includes yours.

WORRIED IF YOU’LL MAKE FRIENDS? SO ARE YOUR FELLOW STUDENTS ☺️

As you step into your first week at CBS, you’re stepping into a world of new people and new beginnings.

For some of you, bonding with new friends might have happened on day one, while some of you may need more time to open up and let others get close to you. Both approaches are perfectly fine, just as feeling a bit nervous in your first weeks on campus is perfectly normal.

Remember, most other students are also looking to make friends on campus. The introduction week is a great place to get to know your fellow students, but if you don’t instantly click with anyone there, don’t worry – more opportunities will come your way. You can meet new friends in your programme or by joining one of CBS’ many student unions and organisations.

Rest assured; CBS is here to support you every step of the way. While we cannot make friends for you, we’re here to talk if any aspect of student life feels challenging: https://studentcbs.sharepoint.com/sites/StudentLife/SitePages/en/Where-to-get-help.aspx

THANK YOU FOR THE GREAT INTEREST 🤩

When the deadline for applying for a bachelor programme was met yesterday at noon, 6,036 had applied for a bachelor’s programme at CBS in quota 1. This is the highest number ever.

In all we had 16 per cent increase in first priority applicants compared to last year.

But having more applicants is not just good news. As President of CBS Nikolaj Malchow-Møller puts it:
“Above all, I’m delighted to see such interest in CBS. To me, it confirms that the staff at CBS have managed to develop some highly attractive education programmes. But I also realise that, as a consequence, we will unfortunately have to turn down a good many qualified applicants.”

Who will get in and who will start their studies somewhere else, will be revealed on 28 July where we send out acceptance e-mails from midnight.

If you have any questions before then, please contact our student guidance counsellors : https://www.cbs.dk/en/study/bachelor/contact

For now, have a great summer 🌞

KNOWLEDGE IS KEY 🧠🔑

Sadly, every semester, a number of CBS students are reported for cheating because they have violated a rule, they weren’t even aware of.

Therefore, the best way to avoid cheating is to get acquainted with the rules and regulations for the type of exam you are taking. Also read up on what tools you are allowed to bring to the different types of exams, make sure you know the formal requirements, and find out what qualifies as plagiarism 🔨

If you accidentally end up cheating, it can have grave consequences for you. But fear not, we have gathered all the information you need about exams at my.cbs.dk: https://studentcbs.sharepoint.com/sites/MyCBSNews/SitePages/exam-ready.aspx?utm_source=Facebook+&utm_medium=Social+&utm_campaign=Eksamenskampagne+q4+2021&utm_content=Know+the+rules+FB

FEMALE RESEARCHERS ARE UNDERREPRESENTED

“We wish to recruit and retain talented researchers of both genders at this university. However, more female role models could perhaps contribute to more women getting a career within research. This will also give the university a larger talent pool to recruit from,” states Søren Hvidkjær, Dean of Research at CBS in an article posted on International Women’s Day, where CBS shares a list of female experts for the media to contact.

Recently, Danish Akademikerbladet published a list of the most quoted experts in Danish media in 2022, of which only three out of 50 were women. Based on Infomedia data, CBS has counted how much media coverage CBS researchers got in 2022. Among 50 of the most covered researchers, 45 were men and 5 were women.

At CBS only 20% of professors are women, but CBS is working towards more equal gender representation and the hope is, that more female researchers becoming more visible may have a positive impact on the university and the number of female professors in general.
