The CBS Executive MBA recently visited Silicon Valley for the International Digitalisation module. Louise Vang Edwards, a Director at DIS - CREADIS Engineering Solutions & Consulting, reflects on her key learnings and experience >>

"What a week!

Returning after 7 days immersed in learning about generative AI, augmented reality and data analytics in the tech capital of the world; Silicon Valley. Visiting Stanford University, NVIDIA and Apple’s HQ, and hearing key notes from Meta, Google, Salesforce, Eclipse a VC.

My head is spinning, but I’m also more excited than ever to be part of what these technologies can do. With the big disclaimer - that I’m by no means an expert! - here’s what I found the most interesting:

1. 🤖 Generative AI is more than just large language models! (Thanks for drilling that into us Shomit Ghose 😉). In essence, it is all about machines and systems learning to predict and create. The glass ceiling of computers needing clear instructions has been shattered. And it is a game-changer. Like the steam engine, it will evolve/disrupt a wide array of industries.

2. 🧠 Jobs will change, but most agree that the best results are achieved with GenAI when you have ‘a human in the loop’. So it’s more about becoming Ironman with a new cool suit, than fearing the Terminator taking over.

3. 🎯 We are all in the business of data! If you don’t realise, you’ll be vulnerable to disruption. Think about Stripe offering business loans because they can anticipate when small businesses will need them. In this way data gathered can open new surprising doors, and the incumbents won’t know what hit them.

4. 🚀 The next couple of years will be special. People here are talking about GenAI, like it’s the second coming. As with any technology it has potential to create blue ocean opportunities, and solve great challenges related to the environment and health, or we can use it to predict what ‘wheel’ is most addictive for teenagers 😱 With this in mind, it’s great to see fast-moving legislation from the US with Biden’s Executive Order last week and the EU’s AI Act.

5. 🦄 Finally, It’s not all rainbows and unicorns; this trip also highlighted the data monopoly that exists, the inhuman inequality in a rich city like SF, and how Europe runs the risk of being left behind in the technology race being too slow and risk-averse. So I guess it will be our job - all leaders in Europe - to make sure that doesn’t happen 😊
