Dernæst handler det om at kende og styre sit eget ego og kunne stå i konflikter. Dette trænes verbalt og nonverbalt. Sessions videofilmes således at den enkelte kan se sig selv agere for derefter at kunne justere på sit udtryk. De fysiske værktøjer er ganske få, men testet under ekstrem stress. Fokus er ikke på de enkelte værktøjer, men på taktik og dialog. Dernæst på en fysisk respons der er høj

Infight skills, drills and increasing pressure!

This session was with focus on infight skills, here the use of elbows and headbutts.

We took a slightly new approach, here “trying” to wrap one arm and controlling the opponents structure with the other hand.
From here main artillery should be elbows from different angels, knees and headbutts if the target is reachable. (Inspiration to this approach was from Lethwei)

As always we start from scratch, moving to pads and used quite som time on structure and timing getting it to work on a padded assailant without to much resistance.

From here we slowly amped up and ended the session with a situation where your vision and therefor timing is impaired. Here simulated with stroboscopic light.🚨
It’s much harder to spot an attack under these conditions, and some hits did get in!🥊

Still, the guys did good and some of the elements from the training still emerged under pressure.🤟

Because we often see that these tools makes the difference!whatever it is pre-emption or counter offensive action💪

The infight skills in this session was with heavy inspiration from Lethwei/Burmese boxing.
As always we took it gratuatly from drills and ended with all out on a padded aggressive assialient.
Here it dosent come out exactly as drilled, but with the same principles and good result!

First part of this session was with focus on boundary’s and contact management.
How to set them verbally, with active body language, and how to reinforce if the boundaries isn’t respected.

This is one of the “elephants in room” in the world of self protection. It’s often talked about but rarely trained, although most conflict starts in this phase and can be ended in this phase if you are in control of your communication skills and ego.
It starts with you. Not in the dojo or on the street, but in your daily life. Healthy boundaries must be set, they do not come by themselves. This applies to all those you meet on your way, friends, family, work and of course the "strangers on the street”.

For the few this come natural, for most people this is a skill set that must be trained with active role players.

Session ended with sweat and in-fight skills. Here we jumped in timeline to a more dire and statistically rare situation.
How to deal with a situation where you have mised everything and now are on the ground, subject in mount and pounding the best he can.🥊🥊

First time this gentleman here trains counter knife, fourth time he has been training with us. This was with focus on sudden knife attacks.(stab/slash)

The challenge here is good role play and switch in mindset. From being a caretaker that works with low arousal care for a person/patient, to a dire situation where you a threatened to your life, and it becomes pure self defense.
We build this up gradually with focus on change in mindset.

Here we make short scenarios around his particular work life and potential threats: You are alone, no college’s, no equalizer and no options of escaping.
You find yourself alone with a person that literally see YOU as a monster.
Statistically, we see far to many care takers, doctors, pedagogues that are facing these kinds of threats in there daily job here in Denmark.

De escalation is always first priority, but it fails here.

We don’t do demo’s or set up a scenario to a perfect run.
We vary script, timing, aggression and distance. What might work with distance: fending and groin kick, is not easy to deploy if you are in a smaller room or just cornered.

Our Viking did really great here!👍 after just 1,5 hours intense instruction. Both in pre emption and when under sudden attack’s. 🤯

These jobs can be very challenging and statistical some of the most exposed jobs for knife attacks here in Denmark.

Then there is now way around it, you have to get in the water.

It’s the same if you want to learn the physical part of realistic self protection. (Many will come a long way with information about 𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 and learn 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭.)

Drills and known scripts with compliance is equivalent to “dry training” on land.
It’s the first needed steps for learning skills and expanding each students window of tolerance.

When the student is ready(screened for readiness) the total package of skills and primarily mindset, should be trained in conditions that mimic a real live event:

🔹Unknown script
🔹 surprise/ambush/confusion
🔹Non compliance, short distance
🔹Multiples and weapons
🔹Environment that limits your choices

These clips here is the physical phase of the scenarios👊👊
We train all phases in some scenarios. Variation is important, we want people to think and problem solve, and only activate “battle mode” when there is no other options!
It is possible to de escalate an ego/status based conflict, these situations is trained with active roleplay as well.
We will show such an example later!

In-fight skills, here the “Shredder”

Self protection/self defense:

If we had just one hour to learn a untrained person some in-fight skills, the “Shredder” with the 5 principles from Richard Dimitri would be one of the first priority’s.

It’s simple, easy to learn and use for everyone, scalable in force, and highly adaptable for many situations.
It’s a tool for close quarter, if deployed correctly, it changes the predator/prey roles immediately.

First clip in this snippet is a scenario after 1 hour of instruction. Our student have never trained martial art, combat sport or any other self protection style.
Still he solved the problem, with quite some resistance from the role player!
(This class was with focus on in fight skills, not fine tuning of contact management)

It looks messy and strange for those that haven’t tried it, but it is very unpleasant and intimidating.
It has to be felt, to fully grasp the potential.(last clip)

A quite unique tool that should be in everybody’s “toolbox”.

Being shredded is a feeling thing. It really looks messy, but feels like being chased by a group of piranhas!

We took it from scratch, focusing on the quickest and earliest possible escape.

Lots of theory, drills and last we did some good scenarios💪
Here with full escape, adrenaline present, first aid check, apply tourniquet, and mental first aid(parasympathetic focus)

Der er INGEN der har en 100 % løsning når det gælder håndtering af et forestående eller igangværende knivangreb.
Det er yderst problematisk og svært. Noget virker bedre end andet og der er helt klart forhold og “pre threat indicators” som vil forbedre ens situation betragteligt.

En advarsel!
Det første der "slår sig" når dette trænes med realistisk rollespil, aggression og råhed er dit eget ego.
Det er slet ikke smukt, det vil være frustrerende og du vil blive ramt i træningen.

Men du får trænet dit “mindset” din vilje til at GÅ IMOD lige meget hvad der sker. Vi tilrettelægger undervisningen til hver kursist. Det handler i stor grad om at udvide den enkeltes tolorencer for at stå i “oprørt hav”. Der startes på smult vande og derfra skrues gradvist op.

Vi kører med små hold < 10 personer og stor dedikation i instruktionen.

Conflict management

Ego/status based situation:
Manage distance, don't go with the drama.
Talk from yourself and be human, don't let your ego highjack your brain.
Easy to do under emotionel pressure? absolutly not!🤯

After some sessions most people get the principle and improve their verbal and non-verbal communication.
It’s in the verbal phase of a conflict you identify if it is a good guy having af bad day or a bad guy with bad intensions.

IF IT’S A PREDATORY THREAT🐊, then YOU are selected and it’s a diffrent toolbox. Keep distance, EXIT if possible, posturing might work for some, be ready to go pre-emptive. It will be difficult to de-escalate. Most likely it will be an ambush.

We looked on one solution to retain/control a subject with minium force. Here push/pull to get the side and a takedown.
To deal with a predatory threat, here pre-emption with a kick to the groin and a take down.

We ended the training with active roleplay. Here dialouge and exposure ajusted to each students capacity.
For the new vikings! a simple problem and one of the trained skills as a solution, a push to create distance, or the trained takedown.
For the experienced guys, they didn’t know what they would be exposed to or the solution. It was problemsolving in high speed.(Ambush/knife attack)

The Vikings are back in town🤟

Still summerholiday for many, but we had a good team tonight!

First we focused on conflict management:
Around 75 % of violence incidences(DK) between males are ego/status based conflicts.
Highly possible to de escalate. But it must be trained as any other skill!
The majority of the the self defense wold do not focus on what actually escalates a conflict, and how it can be managed constructively.
“Take it easy”, “calm down”, “relax” is all petrol on the fire, not water!
Talking from yourself and not criticizing the other part is an art.

We took it from scratch.
Getting body language aligned with our verbal message. “Go to sentences” where rehearsed with increasing problems/aggression to de-escalate.
From here a low force handling solution, push-pull in to a rotation take-down(inspiration from Jim Armstrong)

What if it turned out to be a predatory threat?
We looked on distance, tools here kick to to groin and takedown - EXIT -

Session ended with active roleplay here adjusted levels according to the experience from each student! So non-complient for the experienced guys and semi-compliments for the new Vikings!
It’s all about building people up💪

Everybody was dedicated in drills, roleplay and scenarios!

THE MATRIX FOR CONFLICT MANGEMENT is our core in the first two focus points at THOR self-protection Copenhagen:
The Matrix gives the student and instructor immediately access to useful information, priorities, and principles.

Self-protection is much more than the physical skills that is needed in an in-fight situation.
It’s very much about information about how to avoid difficult situations in the first place. Knowing the timeline in a conflict and most of all about understanding and being in sync with how you use your own verbal and nonverbal communication.
Lastly is the aftermath from an event. Often overlooked in many aspects, the mental first aid and potential trauma that might first emerge months or years after the event.

We have collected principles and information that we find essential and have orchestrated everything in a matrix/timeline.
This is our take, so it might not fit into your needs or place on earth, but we have tried to make it as universal as possible.

From this Matrix we prioritize the first two main pillars in our instruction and training.
Secondary, for those that want more, we teach and train:

See the signals before the situation escalates. What to look for, how to act while it’s still just a “spark” and not an uncontrollable bonfire.
Intuition is a strong ally. Accompanied with an analysis of your current situation and relations, the process of identifying “red flags” in your surroundings, can enhance the signals your intuition is giving you. The goal is to prevent dangerous situations, and often also give a better understanding of the dynamics in your different relationships.

90 % of fights(approx.) between males are based on an ego- or status-based conflict.
These conflicts can be avoided and de-escalated 100 %
We teach and train these abilities just as any other physical skill.
10 % of conflicts are predatory threats, and here you must approach differently.

For those that want the physical skills to handle a violent situation.
If there is no way around it, you must use force to create the window in time to get to a safe place.
We teach skills that are simple and tested under pressure.
Situations with multiples and methods against weapons are prioritized.

Active and realistic roleplay is the foundation in all our scenarios.
It’s driven by the situation and by the dialogue from both parties.
When the student is ready, force and aggression will be increased to mimic a real-life scenario.

We each have our own “boiling point”.
It’s the emotional outburst that is often the first attack in a conflict.
If you are used to shallow water, high waves won’t be easy to navigate in. That’s the same with the emotional content in a conflict or a scenario.
It will be trained gradually as students become better role-players. The goal is to expand the window of tolerance for emotional content, this with respect for each student’s capacity.
Your emotions and mindset are the most important part in any response to violence. Actions driven by emotions and mindset can eclipse physical size, strength, and skills.

Hvad er Urban Combatives?

Det er reelt realistisk selvforsvar/selfprotection med fokus på alt fra mindset til prefight, fight og postfight. Træningen indeholder såvel "soft skills" som undgåelse, nedskallering og situationskontrol, som "hard skills" her forebyggende angreb, opfølgende angreb, våben, flere modstandere og exit-strategier.

Hvordan trænes/øves situationerne?

Der arbejdes med enkle "værktøjer" ift. den fysiske håndtering af en selvforsvarssituation, fokus er meget rettet på at etablere et så realistisk træningsmiljø som muligt. Scenarier med en eller flere agressorer samt våben, her primært kniv, er en fast del af træningen.
