Icarus is the son of the master inventor Daedalus. The two are imprisoned on an island by King Minos. Unable to find a way to escape, Daedalus creates wings for himself and his son by binding together feathers with wax. Before they take flight, he warns Icarus: “Do not fly too low, or the sea’s moisture will weigh the wings down; and do not fly too high, or the sun will melt the wax.”

At first, Icarus flies carefully, but he becomes carried away by the freedom of the sky. He keeps rising higher and higher, forgetting his father’s warning, and flies too close to the sun. As the heat increases, the wax holding his wings together begins to melt. The feathers fall away one by one, the wings fall apart, and Icarus loses control and plunges into the sea. Thus, driven by the thrill of freedom and overreaching his limits, he meets a tragic end.
