Eine ganze halbe Stunde gibt es Benny Goodman – muss diese Woche sein, denn er hat heute seinen 40. Todestag.

This week’s soundtrack begins with a very special tribute: a full half-hour dedicated to Benny Goodman, marking the 40th anniversary of his passing.

You can also look forward to hearing from Mary Roos, making her very first appearance on the programme.

P.S. The sweet little fellow in the photo is Yuma, Stefanie Heinzmann’s dog. He joined us at our home concerts in Stuttgart last weekend and, as you can probably imagine, won hearts wherever he went. We couldn't resist sharing him with you.

Aktuell sind wir bereits auf dem Weg nach Bielefeld – gemeinsam mit John Beasley, Magnus Lindgren und Lionel Loueke - im Gepäck die Musik von Herbie Hancock.

We’re still buzzing from an incredible weekend.

Our two home shows in Stuttgart were a huge success, and hearing Stefanie Heinzmann ask whether we’d like to join her on tour? That’s the kind of compliment that stays with you.

Now it’s time to hit the road again. We’re currently on our way to Bielefeld, bringing the music of Herbie Hancock to the stage alongside John Beasley, Magnus Lindgren Music and Lionel Loueke.

The journey continues tomorrow as we head to Hamburg with the same outstanding line-up.

A surprise — and one that couldn't have worked out better!
With songs like Knocking Down the Wall and My Man Is a Mean Man, Stefanie Heinzmann absolutely lit up the stage.

Our first Heimspiel at Stuttgart’s Phoenix Hall got off to a wonderful start last night, with Magnus Lindgren, Lionel Loueke and Stefanie Heinzmann joining us on stage.

It was a joy to make music together and share such a special evening with these exceptional artists.

Were you there when we shared the stage with Calum Scott at last year's SWR3 New Pop Festival?

Not only is he an exceptional artist, he's also one of the nicest people you could hope to meet. In fact, after the concert he jokingly asked if he could keep the SWR Big Band. How lovely is that?

Calum is back in Stuttgart tonight, performing at the Porsche-Arena at 18.30pm.

So here's a question for you: wouldn't it be fantastic to see more collaborations between Calum Scott and the SWR Big Band in the future?

Seine neues Leben beginnt im Jahr 2019:
Ein smarter Mitt-Zwanziger aus der Nähe von Utrecht, gewinnt in seiner Heimat die Neunte Staffel des TV-Musiker-Contests „The Voice Of Holland“.

Zunächst kündigt Dennis van Aarssen seinen gut bezahlten Job als Projektmanager für digitales Marketing, um sich fortan ganz auf die Musik konzentrieren zu können. Ein Wagnis, das sich schon bald auszahlen wird:

Dennis hat eine „Goldene Schallplatte“ für sein Debüt einkassiert und bereits 2020 den „Edison Jazz Award“ überreicht bekommen, das holländische Pendant zum „Grammy“. Doch das soll nur der Anfang seiner künstlerischen Laufbahn sein.

Die ersten drei Platten wurden Anfang des Jahres auch außerhalb von den Niederlanden, etwa in Deutschland in den Handel gebracht. Das neueste Werk „Just Call It Love“ überzeugte mit Arrangements, die bewusst klein und intim gehalten sind, lag doch der Fokus auf dem Gesang. Unterstützt wurde er dabei von keinem Geringeren als dem New Yorker Jeff Franzel, ehemaliger Pianist und Lieder-Schreiber der Crooner-Koryphäen Sammy Davis Jr. und Frank Sinatra, der der aber auch für 20 internationale Top-Singles mit Künstlern wie Josh Groban, N’SYNC, Taylor Dayne und The Temptations verantwortlich zeichnete.

Die Texte schrieb er gemeinsam mit der renommierten amerikanischen Songwriterin Maria Christensen, die u.a. für Céline Dion, Jennifer Lopez und Disney Productions Hits geschrieben hat.

“Other than my family and my partner — a physician I’ve been with for the past ten years,” Dennis van Aarssen says with a grin, “my life has changed completely.”

That new chapter began in 2019, when the charismatic singer from near Utrecht won the ninth season of The Voice of Holland. At the time, he was a successful young professional in his mid-twenties, working as a digital marketing project manager. After his victory, he took a leap of faith and left his well-paid job behind to pursue music full-time.

It proved to be the right decision. Dennis quickly earned a Gold Record for his debut album and received the prestigious Dutch Edison Jazz Award in 2020 — often regarded as the Netherlands’ equivalent of the Grammy Awards.
Since then, his career has continued to gain momentum.

Earlier this year, his first three albums were released beyond the Netherlands, including in Germany. His latest record, Just Call It Love, showcases a more intimate and understated sound, placing the spotlight firmly on his unmistakable voice.

The album was created in collaboration with renowned New York musician and songwriter Jeff Franzel, former pianist and songwriter for legendary crooners Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra.

Franzel has also contributed to numerous international hits for artists including Josh Groban, *NSYNC, Taylor Dayne, and The Temptations.
The lyrics were co-written with acclaimed American songwriter Maria Christensen, whose credits include songs for artists such as Céline Dion and Jennifer Lopez, as well as projects for Disney.

We'll celebrate the life and music of Miles Davis, who would have turned 100 this week and are deeply saddened by the passing of Sonny Rollins.
The legendary saxophonist, who helped shape and redefine jazz from the 1940s onwards, has died at the age of 95.

To honour his remarkable legacy, we've unearthed special recordings from our archives featuring the Südfunk Dance Orchestra, Erwin Lehn and the SWR Big Band.

Expect historic recordings with the Südfunk Dance Orchestra, as well as modernmusic by Giovanni Costello, Dieter Thomas Kuhn and selections from our Kings of Swing programme. And last but not least a track from the SWR Big Band's latest album The Invisible Piano.

Lionel Loueke kommt aus Benin und verbindet in seiner Musik viele westafrikanische Traditionen, die stark mit Rhythmus, Call-and-response oder auch spontanen Einwürfen arbeiten.

Elemente, die später auch Genres wie Jazz, Hip Hop und Rap massiv geprägt haben.
Vielleicht ist genau das der Teil, den seinen einzigartigen und authentischen Sound ausmacht.

Klar ist, Lionel Loueke zählt zu den auergewöhnlichsten Gitarristen unserer Zeit und ist damit ein MUSS für alle Gitarrenfans.

When you listen to Lionel Loueke play, there’s a moment where you stop and think: hang on a second…

“chkk”, “wup”, “vrooom”

Those playful vocal interjections and rhythmic sounds might remind some listeners of ad-libs in hip hop and rap — the spontaneous details that give music energy, personality and groove.

Loueke’s music carries a similar spirit.
Born in Benin, the guitarist draws on a rich range of West African musical traditions, deeply rooted in rhythm, call-and-response and improvisation - elements that would later shape genres including jazz, hip hop and rap.
Perhaps that’s part of what makes his sound feel so unique, alive and unmistakably his own.
One thing is certain: Lionel Loueke is one of the most distinctive guitarists of our time and he is essential listening for guitar lovers everywhere.

RÜCKBLICK: BENEFIZKONZERT DES BUNDESPRÄSIDENTEN

Schon drei Tage ist es her, dass wir das jährliche Benefizkonzert zu Ehren von Bundespräsident Frank-Walter Steinmeier ausgerichtet haben.

Auch inmitten der Hitze war die Atmosphäre auf dem Stuttgarter Schlossplatz großartig!

Wir sind noch immer ganz geflasht und dankbar für das große Vertrauen, das in uns gesetzt wurde. 🥰

Even in the middle of the heat, the atmosphere at Stuttgart’s Schlossplatz was incredible. We’re still overwhelmed and deeply grateful for the trust that was placed in us. 🥰
