Equations with Diane Barbé on the 26th of January 🎶

Weaving together experimental music, biophonic research and activism, Diane Barbé searches for forms of interspecies resonance. Her electronic works incorporate elements of drone and microtonality, oscillating between grace and dystopia, often pairing with analog synths, flutes and field recordings, leaning into dub pulsations. Her debut album of cinema without images, 'a conference of critters', was released on the Berlin-based phonography label forms of minutiae in october 2022. Diane is currently creating an ensemble of wind instruments, percussions, bird calls and little sound devices, called The Alien Kin, that are used for musicking in open air, with and beyond human audiences. With her new dance-oriented project Diakomos, Diane incorporates entomological polyrhythms, recordings of airlines and trains, and overdriven synthesisers to explore collective trance and ritualistic movement.

Recorded in a "mobile and modular" construction fully powered by solar panels on the slopes of Mount Helicon, Greece, the album signifies a symbiosis between the terrestrial and the engineered, between wildlife and futurism, between the intrinsic and the synthetic, between the innate and the manmade. 'The Helicon Sessions' illustrates a unique collaborative exchange which acknowledges the deep nuances of environment and the enduring echoes of history.

Embodying ecological incentives, and representing an immersive engagement with the landscape, the 'Helicon Sessions' document this extraordinary residency, capturing a profound dialogue with the eponymous mountain region.
Situated in Boeotia, Central Greece, Mount Helicon has a prominent archaic significance. A historic location where stories of sacred springs and the epic origins of the Muses and Narcissus converge. Steeped in the heritage of ancient narratives, Helicon is seen as a principal symbol of poetic inspiration.

In 2018, the collective set up a temporary outdoor recording studio, 1130 meters above sea level, on the slopes of Mount Helicon in Greece, with the ambition of recording their work in a natural environment. A ‘mobile and modular’ construction, fully powered by solar panels, the design of the studio showcases the possibilities of a progressive, environmentally sustainable future through renewable energy.
