We regularly host Japanese Culture Workshops in Berlin.

March 1st.
The New Year has long passed, but somehow today still feels like a day that carries the word “beginning.” So I wanted to share something about Kagura (神楽).

This New Year, I watched a masked dance performed by a woman at a shrine in Tokyo.
The sound of bells (Suzu 鈴), the deep echo of the drum (Taiko 太鼓), the breath of the Japanese flute (Fue 笛).
It was quiet, slightly mysterious, and felt as if the air itself was becoming clearer.

It is called Kagura (神楽) - a sacred dance offered to the deities.

Kagura is performed to welcome the gods,
to purify the space, and to pray for peace and well-being throughout the year.

The slow, deliberate movements are not meant to entertain, but to pray.

And the sounds of the flute and drums serve as a form of hospitality - gently welcoming the gods and inviting them to remain in that place.

The New Year marks the beginning of a year.
But March 1st can also be a small beginning.

Personally, the first two months of the year have flown by.
Today in Berlin, the sky opened up into a beautiful blue. As the season begins to shift, it feels like a good moment to reset, realign, and start again.

May this new month be a peaceful one for you all🤍

I had the opportunity of participating in the „Robiraki“ event held at the Humboldt Forum ( ). In the world of tea, „Robiraki“ is often considered the "New Year."

In November, as we enter winter, we transition from using the portable brazier (Furo-風炉) to the built-in hearth (Ro-炉), a small in-floor brazier. An iron kettle is placed over the Ro-炉 to boil water for tea.

It’s truly beautiful to see everyone gather and celebrate the changing seasons in this way. I’m grateful for the chance to have this experience.

One of the reasons I love workshops is that I get to learn so much from all the participants.

In this session, we focused on the kanji character for “rain” and explored various interpretations, asking each participant to express their own imagined version of “rain.”

One participant told me that her design was inspired by hiragana (a native Japanese script, written on a separate sheet in the first picture). How amazing is that? Such a beautiful design and the concept was simply stunning!

Even with a single kanji, the possibilities for creative expression are infinite. We were deeply moved by the originality and beauty of this design.

Here’s a look at our recent workshop (session 1). We, the organizers, probably enjoyed it the most, thanks to everyone’s incredible imagination/creativity! A big thank you to all who attended!
