So very sad to hear of the great TV director Brian Large's passing at 87. Always the perfect gentleman, he set standards for filming opera that have not been surpassed. Nor, I think, will. He studied the complete scores, had genuine love and respect for the singers and the creative team. Countless Met productions, the legendary Boulez/Chereau Ring. My personal memories date from his filming of the "Lear" by Aribert Reimann with Jean-Pierre Ponnelle directing and Gerd Albrecht conducting. Also the "Tristan and Isolde" production by Ponnelle and Daniel Barenboim in Bayreuth. And the various New Year's concerts with the Vienna Philharmonic / Wiener Philharmoniker conducted by Lorin Maazel. His book "Brian at Large" got published in 2025. Well worth reading!

Wrocław Opera 2025-26 Review: Juliette ('The Key to Dreams') - OperaWire 01/05/2026

Another great production at Opera Wrocławska : "Julietta" by Bohuslav Martinu, conducted by MirianKhukhunaishvili / მირიან ხუხუნაიშვილი and directed by Barbara Wiśniewska https://operawire.com/wroclaw-opera-2025-26-review-juliette-the-key-to-dreams/ Where do dreams end and reality begin - or the other way around?

Wrocław Opera 2025-26 Review: Juliette ('The Key to Dreams') - OperaWire What is reality, what is dream? In "Juliette," Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů constructs an aural dreamscape in which memory dissolves almost as soon as it forms, and identity flickers with unstable voltage.

Norwegian National Opera and Ballet 2025-26 Review: Wonderful Bernstein! - OperaWire 27/04/2026

At the Den Norske Opera & Ballett I attended a really "Wonderful Bernstein" concert with Garrett Keast conducting. Here's my review https://operawire.com/norwegian-national-opera-and-ballet-2025-26-review-wonderful-bernstein/ Truly great fun!

Norwegian National Opera and Ballet 2025-26 Review: Wonderful Bernstein! - OperaWire There are evenings when a thematic program feels like an academic conceit, and others when it becomes a kinetic organism.

Traumreise ohne Wiederkehr 20/04/2026

"Julietta" by Bohuslav Martinu - a fascinating, surreal, dreamlike music and opera. Saw it in Wroclaw, Poland. Here is my review in German

National Theatre in Prague 2025-26 Review: Parsifal - OperaWire 03/04/2026

Here's my review of the new Parsifal production at the Prague National Opera with Andreas Homoki directing and Markus Poschner conducting.

National Theatre in Prague 2025-26 Review: Parsifal - OperaWire A week before Good Friday, the National Theatre in Prague premiered a "Parsifal" that seemed less a ritual of inherited faith than an inquiry into the architecture of knowledge itself.
