Hundreds upon hundreds of cultural sites across Ukraine have been damaged since Russia’s full-scale invasion. More than 500 locations, including libraries, archives, museums and historical buildings, suffered damage. It’s not just physical heritage that Russia is bombing and shelling: the Kremlin is also waging a disinformation war to denigrate Ukrainian memory and identity.

Q***r activists and artists are urgently working to ensure LGBTQIA+stories and cultural heritage aren’t lost. At the heart of this effort is the ***r.war.archive.ua, a grassroots initiative documenting q***r life during the war.

The N**i soldier embodies performative masculinity in a literal sense. His actions and image convey a specific cultural understanding of masculinity: machismo, militarism, heroism, and whiteness. He is both cruel and unapproachable, yet he can also evoke unbridled sexual desire – as if he has just stepped off the set of an er*tic photo shoot or gay p**nography film. This essay traces how fascist culture both suppressed and appropriated homosexuality to forge identities through violence and the othering of difference.

In the first two decades of independence, q***r people in Ukrainian Donetsk became aware of and understood themselves while being surrounded only by information from print media, television, or their immediate social circles. And there, the necessary resources were lacking. Most of what the press published about LGBTQI+ people were scandalous reports. This piece tracks how this situation and the lived experiences of q***r people have changed since then.

Unlike in previous Russian regimes, where it lingered on the periphery, homophobia is now positioned at the very heart of Putinism’s ideological self-presentation. Indeed, one of the climactic moments of Putin’s speech on his largest annexation was a homophobic accusation against the West, branding it as satanic:

“Do we want, here in our country, in Russia, to have ‘Parent Number One,’ ‘Number Two,’ ‘Number Three’ instead of mom and dad — have they completely lost their minds over there? Do we want our schools, starting from the early grades, to impose perversions on our children that lead to degradation and extinction? To drill into their heads that there are supposedly other genders besides women and men, and to offer them gender reassignment surgeries? Do we want all this for our country and our children? For us, all of this is unacceptable; we have a different future, our own future… Such a complete denial of humanity, the overthrow of faith and traditional values, and the suppression of freedom take on the characteristics of a ‘reverse religion’ — outright satanism.”

First, Kari had to hand over the cell phone. Then a staff member rummaged through both of Kari’s bags, took away hormones and medications. And all items that, according to the staff member, were not suitable for a woman. Intrusive enough – even if Kari were a woman. Kari is trans and non-binary. And Kari experienced violence in a situation where they were promised protection. 

For Kari, it happened like this: they lived with violence for years. Because the perpetrators would look for Kari after fleeing, they needed a safe place to stay. Kari therefore called several counseling centers, but they refused to provide protection. The rejection was always the same: the rooms were only available to cis women. That was about five years ago. Kari was in early 20s at the time.
