Beautifully illustrated with 30 hand-colored steel engravings (single-sided). Scarce.

Sir William Jardine, 7th Baronet of Applegirth, Dumfriesshire (23 February 1800, Edinburgh to 21 November 1874, Sandown, Isle of Wight) was a Scottish naturalist. Jardine made natural history available to all levels of Victorian society by editing and issuing the hugely popular forty volumes of The Naturalist's Library (1833-1843). The series was divided into four main sections:Ornithology (14 volumes), Mammalia (13 volumes), Entomology (7 volumes), and Ichthyology (6 volumes); each prepared by a leading naturalist. James Duncan wrote the insect volumes. The artists responsible for the illustrations included Edward Lear. The work was published in Edinburgh by W. H. Lizars. The frontispiece is a portrait of Latreille Jardine's other publications included an edition of Gilbert White's Natural History of Selborne which re-established White's reputation, Illustrations of Ornithology (1825–43), and an affordable edition of Alexander Wilson'sBirds of America.
Condition: Good, firm binding, contents good, a little faded to spine, no dust jacket. Hand-Colored engravings in excellent condition with vibrant colors as per scan.

This highly decorative antique print originates from a scarce natural history volume published in France in 1880.The volume contained beautiful color plates depicting various species of animals and birds.
Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon 7 September 1707 – 16 April 1788) was a French naturalist, mathematician, cosmologist, and encyclopedic author. His works influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Georges Cuvier. Buffon published thirty-six quarto volumes of his Histoire naturelle during his lifetime; with additional volumes based on his notes and further research being published in the two decades following his death.It has been said that "Truly, Buffon was the father of all thought in natural history in the second half of the 18th century".Buffon held the position of intendant (director) at the Jardin du Roi, now called the Jardin des Plantes;
