Als hun straf vervalt, verminderen ook de bijeffecten van deze veroordelingen, verwacht Biden. Hij heeft ook aangekondigd het gebruik van ma*****na te decriminaliseren, zodat bezit en gebruik van kleine hoeveelheden niet langer leidt tot strafvervolging.

Cannabis consumption lounges are coming to the city of Las Vegas.

In a 5-1 vote, the City Council on Wednesday denied Councilwoman Victoria Seaman’s motion to opt out of allowing such businesses.

Councilman Stavros Anthony, who wasn’t at the meeting, did not vote.

By not responding to a letter from the Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board earlier this month, the city automatically opted in to the licensing process, but still had an opportunity Wednesday to change course.

Unincorporated Clark County and Las Vegas will be the only jurisdictions in Southern Nevada to host the lounges, which are akin to taverns, but with no alcohol sales allowed.

The businesses will allow ma*****na customers to smoke the drug legally for the first time outside of private homes since voters legalized recreational use in 2016. This left out the 40 million or so yearly tourists without a place to legally smoke, having them to resort to doing so illegally in the street, parking garages or hotel rooms, officials have stressed.

Overheid Sint Maarten overweegt legalisatie cannabisgebruik

De regering van Sint Maarten denkt na over het legaliseren van cannabis op haar grondgebied, het voorstel geld voor zowel medisch als recreatief gebruik op een verantwoorde manier.

Daarom vraagt de minister om structuren, en vraagt om hulp van verschillende verenigingen en andere organisaties om hem te vergezellen in zijn reflectie. Hij wil ook vertrouwen op studies over de effecten van de legalisatie van cannabis voordat hij een beslissing neemt.

De Minister van Volksgezondheid, Omar Ottley, zegt dat hij bereid is om voorstellen te ontvangen van lokale of niet-lokale bedrijven die willen samenwerken en de sociaal-economische effecten van legalisatie en de therapeutische goederen met betrekking tot de bevolking van Sint Maarten willen analyseren.

Lawmakers in Bermuda, a British territory since the 17th century, approved the administration’s “flagship” cannabis legalization proposal earlier this year, but it was withheld for months as the government awaited “royal assent”—a formal, monarchical sign-off on legislation—from the UK-appointed governor of the territory.

Then, on the same day that Truss became prime minister of the UK, the government informed Bermuda that it had decided “not to assent to the bill as drafted,” Bermuda Gov. Rena Lalgie announced. The UK said it couldn’t give its authorization based on its interpretation of international treaties that bar member states from legalizing cannabis for reasons beyond medical or scientific use.

The governor of California signed a bill on Tuesday that includes provisions mandating that social workers who are called to investigate child welfare handle parental ma*****na use in the same way that they do for alcohol.

Assemblymember Reggie Jones-Sawyer (D) sponsored the legislation, which is one of about a dozen cannabis-related bills that have been sent to Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) in recent weeks.

Under the now-enacted law, the state Department of Social Services (DSS) is required to update “all regulations, all-county letters, and other instructions relating to the investigation of a minor” to stipulate that “when a social worker is investigating an alleged case of child abuse or neglect, a parent’s or guardian’s use or possession of cannabis is treated in the same manner as a parent’s or guardian’s use or possession of alcohol and legally prescribed medication.”

In some states, parental ma*****na consumption can be used as a justification for removing custody, even if there is no indication of danger to the child.

Jones-Sawyer said in a summary for the bill that “cannabis use alone should not be a basis for state intervention into family life.”

“As is the case with alcohol and prescription medication, parents and guardians should be allowed to safely and legally use cannabis without fear of having their children permanently removed from their care, provided there are no other concerns regarding the child’s safety,” he said.

According to a study published in April, legalizing ma*****na for adult use is associated with at least a 10 percent decrease in foster care admissions on average, including reductions in placements due to physical abuse, neglect, parental incarceration and misuse of alcohol and other drugs.

Further, if cannabis was legalized nationally, the study authors estimated that would result in hundreds of millions of dollars in estimated cost savings for foster care systems every year.

Back in California, the state NORML chapter praised the new law.
