Within the Erasmus+ project EmLead, a training for youth workers was held in Vienna, bringing together participants from Spain, Austria, Serbia, Türkiye, Italy, and Slovenia. 🤝

The training focused on strengthening the capacities of youth workers to work with young people, especially by fostering empathy through role-playing scenarios developed by the project partners. Through practical work, exchange of experiences, and joint testing of the scenarios, participants explored how these methods can support a better understanding of different perspectives and contribute to higher-quality youth work. 🌍✨

The joint work of the partners once again showed how important international cooperation is for developing quality tools and approaches in youth work. 💬

🌱 A new EmLead blog article is now published! 🌱

The article “Why Soft Skills Are the Soil of Human Learning” offers insights from a Spanish author on why soft skills — empathy, communication, emotional awareness, collaboration — form the foundation for meaningful human development, both personal and professional. It highlights that this “emotional ground” enables young people to grow into leaders who lead with understanding and authenticity.

📖 If you believe that young people should not only learn to do but also learn to be, this article is for you.

🌍 Empathy + AI + Leadership = The Future of Generation Z
In today’s digital world, leadership is no longer about hierarchy or authority — it’s about understanding others, embracing diversity, and applying emotional intelligence. The article on the EmLead blog highlights that while Generation Z excels in technology, it often lacks interpersonal communication, emotional regulation, and empathy skills. (emlead.eu
)

🎭 One of the most effective tools for developing these skills is role-playing. Through simulations of real-life situations, young people can practice seeing from another’s perspective, managing emotions, and communicating constructively — all within a safe space for reflection.

🤖 When Artificial Intelligence enters the picture, it doesn’t mean that “humanity” disappears. On the contrary, AI can help free space for what is most human — empathy, understanding, and meaningful connection.

➡️ Why does this matter? Because future leaders — especially those from Generation Z — won’t just be technically skilled; they’ll be those who know how to lead with heart and empathy.

✍️ Author: Minea Kikere, Smart Institute, Slovenia

📌 If you want your team, youth group, or project participants to gain these competencies, consider activities that combine role-playing, reflection, and the creative use of digital tools for social-emotional development.

📚🎬 “The Secret Gym” for Empathy – How Books and Films Shape the Way We Feel

Have you ever deeply connected with a character in a book or a film, as if you were experiencing their thoughts and emotions? That is the power of storytelling — a kind of “empathy gym” where we practice seeing the world through someone else’s eyes.

In the article “The ‘secret gym’ for Empathy”, Irisa Hasani from TDM 2000 ODV, Italy, explores three “exercises” that stories offer:

🥾 Walking in someone else’s shoes – through characters, we experience their dilemmas, joys, and fears.

💡 Developing social-emotional intelligence – stories help us name emotions, understand reactions, and notice subtle nuances in relationships.

🔍 Looking beyond the “villain” – we learn to see not only the actions but also the wounds, motivations, and circumstances that shaped them.

It’s not just about escaping reality — it’s about reconnecting with our own humanity. Stories remind us that we can build bridges of understanding, even where barriers seem insurmountable.

🧠 Next time you pick up a book or watch a film, don’t think of it only as entertainment. Take a moment and ask yourself: What would I feel if I were in this character’s place? That’s your session in the “empathy gym” – and with each session, you grow stronger.
