Tree planting for carbon sequestration. At MEDEC, we plan trees that also provide high economic benefits for communities through our agro forestry program. We kick start this tree planting by establishing multipurpose nurseries in target communities. We then plant these trees with local actors, volunteers and we also donate the trees to local farmers for free. We also provide technical knowledge and training to these local actors. 27th September 2022, MEDEC today joins the rest of the rural communities and environmental stakeholders (locally and globally) to celebrate the 2022 WORLD TOURISM DAY under the theme :- 'Rural and Community Centric Tourism'. Considering the significance of eco-tourism to forest communities, MEDEC is taking the odds to mobilize and engage communities in the Bakossi National Park (BNJ) to increase the development of this thematic in the South West region of Cameroon and specifically in the Bakossi National Park of Cameroon. Ecotourism can provide rural and forest communities with the motivation to maintain and protect forests and wildlife –biodiversity. We believe that if we must preserve our biodiversity, then there is that need to engage rural population actively in environmental development.
MEDEC being a frontline organization at the center of the Bakossi National Park, is mobilizing rural population to better understand the role that eco-tourism plays in preserving our biodiversity and in portraying the tourism potentials in the park to the rest of the world. It should be noted that the Bakossi National Park (BNP) is hosting very unique features hard to find anywhere else in the world such as ; the Beautifil Twin Lakes of Muanenguba ( Male and Female lakes – with a wonderful grasslad vegetation, confortable climate, thousands of fauna and flora, giant frog, beautiful sky etc). Also, Kupe-Muanenguba Division is host to other great touristic attractions such as the Mt Kupe, the V-shape Valleys of Muanenguba, the iconic stone of Muadelengoe, the Lake Bemin, and a host of waterfalls and rocks flowing with springs and rivers.

MEDEC has realised the increasing need to develop the eco-tourism potentials of the BNP to protect the high level biodiversity in the park and also to reduce over expliotation of the forest resources by rural communities. This is because, MEDEC has recognized a shift towards tourism a crucial pillar of environmental development in Cameroon.

Considering the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tourism, MEDEC thinks the Motto of this year’s World Tourism Day – ‘Rethinking Tourism’ quite reflects the reality on ground. Therefore, we are ready to work with partners for tourism development.

Tourism generates important economic benefits for indigenous communities and underserved populations. This benefits is what MEDEC the social, economic benefits from our environmental programs in Cameroon.
Tourism can also provide a compelling incentive for governments, NGOs and partners organizations to institute environmental policies and conservation measures. This includes the creation of national parks, nature reserves, and other protected areas to preserve their biodiversity and correspondingly boost their tourism appeal. Responsible tourism has the potential to generate substantial environmental and economic benefits: it can generate well paid, stable jobs, often providing support and an amplified voice for marginalised or rural communities, while preserving wildlife and its habitats. MEDEC with it mandate, is working to leverage all this in the BNP and engage more and more people in tourism development to preserve forest resources from over expliotation and extinction. Tourism offers opportunities to people from all walks of life, supporting vulnerable groups, including minorities, youth and women among others. More peaceful and more tolerant. Tourism is a driver for peace. It helps promote tolerance between people as they learn and better understand each other's cultures. Therefore, tourism is a unifying factor.
At MEDEC we work with forest communities to better manage their touristic attraction. We also engage the population massively in tree planting to build a sustainable ecosystem whcih will boost the enviroment and other components.
With an innovative approach, our programs are blended with research to give to our stakeholders a life experience.
Join or support us at Muanenguba Environmental Development Center – MEDEC and together lets promote the tourism potentials of Kupe-Muanenguba Division in the South West region of Cameroon. [email protected]
