Empowering Women in Tech: Why Cameroon's Girls Should Invest in Technology

In today's digital age, technology is a key driver of innovation, economic growth, and social change. Despite progress, women, especially in Africa, remain underrepresented in the tech industry. In Cameroon, girls and women face unique challenges that hinder their participation in tech. It's time for Cameroonian girls to invest in tech and unlock their full potential.

Why Tech?

Tech skills are in high demand globally, offering lucrative job prospects and entrepreneurial opportunities. For example, Cameroon-based tech startups like GiftedMom and AfroLeadership are creating jobs and solving local problems.

2. Empowerment:

Tech enables women to create solutions addressing local challenges, promoting economic independence and social impact. E.g., mobile apps for healthcare, agriculture, or education can improve lives and communities.

3. Breaking Stereotypes:

Increased female presence in tech challenges traditional gender roles and inspires future generations. Women like Rebecca Enonchong, Cameroonian tech entrepreneur, are paving the way.

Challenges in Cameroon

Limited Access: Girls often lack access to tech resources, training, and role models. Many schools lack computer labs or internet connectivity.

2. Societal Expectations:

Traditional expectations may prioritize domestic roles over tech careers. Girls are often encouraged to focus on "feminine" subjects like arts or humanities.

Lack of Support:

Insufficient encouragement and mentorship hinder girls' interest in tech. Few female tech professionals are visible as role models.

Call to Action

Education and Training:

Encourage girls to pursue STEM education and provide access to tech training. Initiatives like Girls in Tech Cameroon are working to bridge the gap.

Mentorship:

Pair girls with female tech professionals for guidance and inspiration. Companies like Andela are investing in women's tech development.

Community Support:

Foster a supportive environment that promotes girls' participation in tech. Events like hackathons or coding camps can spark interest.

In all, Investing in tech is a step towards a brighter future for Cameroonian girls. By embracing tech, they can unlock opportunities, drive change, and become leaders in their communities.

This year, the dynamics are changing. We are far from believing that a woman's place is no longer in the kitchen but we should know that her place is anywhere any human can extend his hands to.

Let her know how to use AI for her professional aggrandizement.

2026 is here, 2025 is behind us.

This is a sign of growth in many dimensions of our lives.

Do no look back again, the past is gone, what ever it left for us, we deal with it and make of it a better package for the future.

We have become mothers, girls, grown women, in fact, our status might have changed, but our vision remains intact.

Our resolve to fight for a better place in the life of woman stands.
