On Thursday, November 30, 1989, Ahmadou Ahidjo spent an unremarkable day at his residence on the corniche of Dakar, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. He was accompanied by his wife, Germaine, and Adam Maté, a former medical student and family friend. Since January, following a fall in his bathroom, the former President of Cameroon had been suffering from partial paralysis in his lower limbs, which left him unable to move independently.

The atmosphere that afternoon was somber. At 3:00 p.m., a meal was brought to him. Afterward, he lay down, waiting for Adam Maté to administer his medical care. His wife gently inquired if he would like his bed adjusted. However, Ahmadou Ahidjo did not respond—he had just succumbed to a fatal heart attack. It was 5:30 p.m. A few hours later, a brief announcement on the radio and television in Yaoundé confirmed the passing of the former head of state.
