When the Punanga Nui Market reestablished itself in the early 1990s, many vendors had little choice but to bring their children to the market while they worked. Recognising the need, then-Custodian Mama Rosie Blake convinced a close friend to open a daycare right next to the playground.

For many years, that little daycare became a lifeline for countless families, caring for the children of the women who spent their days trading, weaving, cooking and building small businesses.

Seeing Jlo Vaikai with baby Teavanui at the market today is a beautiful reminder that the Punanga Nui Market has always been about more than buying and selling. It's a place where businesses are built, children grow up, friendships are formed, and generations of families continue traditions that have shaped this special place.
