: Ready to venture into the realm of Dragon Blood Trees?

Socotra is a remote and enchanting island located in the Indian Ocean, part of the Republic of Yemen. Known for its surreal and almost alien landscapes, Socotra is often called the “Galapagos of the Indian Ocean” due to its unique and diverse ecosystems. The island is famous for its Dragon’s Blood Trees, which resemble something out of a fantasy novel with their umbrella-shaped canopies and red resin. Socotra’s coastlines are lined with pristine, white sandy beaches, and its interior is adorned with rugged mountains and limestone plateaus. The island is also home to an array of rare and endemic plant and animal species, making it a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With a rich blend of Arabian, African, and Indian cultures, Socotra is a place where time seems to stand still, offering a captivating and unforgettable experience for adventurous travellers.

A big part of the fun of these kind of expeditions is the people you meet along the way. We in this case we were fortunate to be invited into the Nicolas Copernicus University Polar Research Station to spend some time with the researchers and learn how they live and research there.

All geared up for some Arctic Ocean paddling. With water temperatures around 4 degrees and lots of ice floes around, the right protective gear was critical: revelstoke base layers powered by , dry suit and waterproof socks, gloves and headwear made sure we were warm and protected while exploring in our . And let’s not forget the equipment case from and waterproof bag.

When heading north you got to be prepared. Bear bangers, and rifle are critical. You never know what’s afoot when you are ashore.

Often, “travel light” is not an option on our expeditions. Camera, sailing, kayaking, skiing, biking, trekking gear all has to come along. Thankfully we have the perfect tools to lug and protect our gear from destination to destination.
