Cultivating Resilience: Welcoming USCRI Kenya to Our Roots of Change
We were deeply honored this week to welcome the dedicated delegation from the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) Kenya to the Stop Child Abuse center.
It was a profound opportunity to bridge our localized, grassroots efforts with their expansive, international vision for refugee and immigrant support.
The visit served as a powerful reminder of what is possible when robust advocacy meets grounded, community-led action.
While the discussions at our center were deeply inspiring, the true highlight of the day was guiding the USCRI team through our community farm.
This agricultural initiative is the beating heart of our sustainability model.
The delegates walked the fields and saw firsthand how this land is transforming more than just the soil it is fundamentally transforming the lives of the caregivers and parents who tend to it.
We do not view agriculture merely as a source of food; we see it as a critical engine for holistic community empowerment, climate resilience, and systemic child protection.
By training parents in sustainable farming practices, we are directly investing in the self-reliance of the communities and camps we serve.
The farm acts as an active incubator for food sovereignty and economic independence. When a caregiver can reliably harvest crops to feed their family and sell the surplus for income, the entire household stabilizes. Financial desperation decreases, emotional resilience grows, and children are shielded from the vulnerabilities that stem from extreme poverty.
Our agricultural developments ensure that the families residing within the camps are not simply surviving, but are actively given the tools and agency to rebuild their livelihoods on their own terms.
The USCRI team’s keen interest in this intersection of agriculture and family sustainability validates our core operational belief: you cannot fully protect the child without first empowering the parent. Our shared conversations illuminated the vital importance of moving beyond temporary aid and transitioning toward long-term, community-owned resilience.
Every seed planted on our farm is a direct investment in a family's future, a definitive step away from dependency, and a solid barrier against the cycles of abuse and neglect.
We extend our deepest gratitude to USCRI Kenya for their time, their validating presence, and their shared commitment to uplifting marginalized voices.

A child’s safety does not begin at school. It begins at home.
But here is the question we asked our caregivers and parents at Stop Child Abuse (SCA):
What happens when a parent knows how to listen before judging, recognize signs of abuse, and support a child’s emotions?
Something changes.
Through our community engagement sessions, SCA is empowering caregivers and parents with practical knowledge on Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), Gender-Based Violence (GBV), and Child Protection.
We are creating spaces where parents can learn how to:
- Understand and support children’s emotions and behaviour
- Communicate with children without fear or judgment
- Recognize and prevent child abuse and violence
- Identify risks and respond to GBV and child protection concerns
Build safer, more supportive homes for children
Because protecting children is not only about responding when harm happens.
It is about equipping families to prevent harm before it happens.
At SCA, we believe that empowered caregivers create safer families, and safer families build stronger communities.
This is what refugee-led community action looks like: knowledge shared, parents empowered, children protected.

Amplifying Refugee-Led Voices for Safer Communities 🎙️
Today, I was honoured to join an important talk show at Atoo Sifa FM, following an invitation from Danish Refugee Council Kenya Programme, alongside GBV and Child Protection partners and fellow Refugee-Led Organizations (RLOs).
We had the opportunity to share the work we are doing within our communities to prevent and respond to Gender-Based Violence (GBV), protect children, promote their rights, and strengthen community awareness and support systems.
As a refugee-led organization, we believe that communities affected by displacement should not only be beneficiaries of protection programmes; they should also be active partners, advocates, and leaders in creating solutions.
Radio provides a powerful platform to reach families, young people, parents, community leaders, and other stakeholders with messages that can encourage prevention, early reporting, survivor-centred support, and stronger protection for children.
I am grateful to DRC Kenya and Atoo Sifa FM for creating space for RLOs and community actors to share our experiences, challenges, and ongoing efforts.
Together, through partnership, community leadership, and collective action, we can build safer, more inclusive, and protective communities for every child and every person. 🤝🏽💜

It was a privilege to host the team from Cohere at our Stop Child Abuse (SCA) agriculture project site last month!
During their visit, we showcased the incredible work of one of our dedicated parenting groups. These parents are actively cultivating the land to build food security and sustainable livelihoods. Ultimately, this hard work directly benefits the children we serve, ensuring they grow up in a supported, self-reliant community.
Strong partnerships and community-led initiatives are at the heart of what we do. When parents are empowered through sustainable agriculture, the entire community thrives, and children are better protected and provided for. Recently, our Parenting Support Group gathered for an open, honest dialogue on the daily realities of raising children today. From managing economic pressures and digital screen-time battles to navigating communication gaps with teenagers, our parents shared the heavy lifting they do every day.
Real transformation happens when we listen to one another and commit to growing together.
Our parents put forward powerful suggestions for positive behavior change for both caregivers and children:Parent Commitments & Solutions:Active Listening Over Reaction: Choosing open dialogue and calm guidance rather than emotional discipline when conflicts arise.
Leading by Example: Modeling the empathy, respect, and digital boundaries we want our children to adopt.Building Community Safety Nets: Checking in on neighbors' children and creating safe neighborhood watch-points.Expectations & Guidance for Children:Digital Discipline & Accountability: Setting healthy boundaries around phone/internet use and prioritizing schoolwork and household responsibility.
Peer Respect & Communication: Encouraging youth to speak up about challenges and practice mutual respect at home and school. Protecting children starts with empowering the adults who love them. When parents feel supported, entire communities thrive! 🌟

Transforming awareness into action starts with our youth!
This week at Stop Child Abuse, our students took the mic, led the charge, and demonstrated what true community leadership looks like. From establishing Student Rights Clubs to stepping up as Child Protection Focal Points in their schools, our young advocates are building safe spaces from the inside out.
Through peer-led discussions and student-driven campaigns, these courageous leaders tackled the tough issues head-on:
- Ending Child Labor: Championing every child's right to learn and play, not work.
- Preventing Early Marriage: Advocating for education, agency, and uninterrupted futures.
- Standing Against GBV: Promoting respect, equality, and safe school environments for everyone.

Strengthening Families, Protecting Children, Building Resilient Communities
At Stop Child Abuse (SCA), we believe that every child deserves to grow up in a safe, nurturing, and supportive environment.
That journey begins with empowering parents and caregivers.
This week, our team conducted a community parenting follow-up session bringing together refugee and host community mothers to reflect, learn, and support one another through Social-Emotional Learning (SEL).
The session highlighted the power of positive parenting in displacement settings:
- Parents shared practical ways to manage stress and regulate emotions, creating calmer and safer homes for their children.
- Refugee and host community caregivers learned side by side, strengthening trust, promoting peaceful coexistence, and building a shared commitment to protecting every child.
- Through peer learning and open dialogue, families exchanged experiences and adapted positive parenting practices that reflect their cultural values and daily realities.
When caregivers are supported, children thrive. By investing in parents, we are strengthening child protection systems, promoting mental well-being, preventing violence, and building resilient communities where every child can reach their full potential.
At SCA, we remain committed to ensuring that child safeguarding extends beyond policies and classrooms—into homes, families, and communities where lasting change begins.

Last month, we successfully concluded our cross-partner learning school visits in refugee-hosting schools.
At STOP CHILD ABUSE (SCA) , these visits are more than just checklists they are a vital opportunity to see how Psychosocial Support (PSS) and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) are being translated into everyday classroom practice.
Using the Ministry of Education's Classroom Observation Tool, we witnessed inspiring moments where teachers are not just delivering content, but actively nurturing safe, inclusive, and emotionally supportive environments. We saw:
- Stronger learner participation and engagement
- Effective integration of core competencies like collaboration and self-efficacy
- Thoughtful inclusion of learners with diverse needs
However, we also identified areas for continued growth.
Our commitment is to use these findings to strengthen child protection frameworks and ensure that every classroom remains a safe haven for all children, especially the most vulnerable.
