Shot on iPhone - Mark Nicol Photography

I've just posted a new gallery to my site comprised of images shot on my iPhones over the last 12 years or so. Ever since getting my first iPhone, a 3Gs, I've loved making images with these handy little devices. Although they can't compare to pro gear in terms of capability or image quality, I think the benefits we photographers get from them makes them invaluable in their own right. They give an immediacy and unobtrusiveness to making images that no other type of camera can, and the point and shoot operation allows a photographer to concentrate on the creative aspects of image making - light, composition, form, interaction, timing - without worrying about heavy gear and technical considerations.
I hope you'll give the gallery a look - best on the big screen, ironically! I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Have you ever seen prop wash coming off the propellers of an airplane? Me either, until now. I took these just to figure out something about my camera's autofocus but when I got them on my computer, I was most confused by these spirals. Turns out prop wash is a normal thing, it's just not this visible most of the time.

A couple of S bends and magic light on a solo tree. The first image is of a salt marsh on the Isle of Harris. The second is of the Black Cuillins on Skye. The two images of the single tree show a fleeting moment where the sun moved between two peaks to briefly light our lonely subject.

Please feel free to share.

My cousin is a terrific photographer and she took the time to tour me around Calgary and Southern Alberta. She called it the ten cent tour, seeing as we're both of the Nicol clan. :) Hope you enjoy these! View them in large format along with other images of our stunningly beautiful country here:

The first of the artSEE Eyewear staff headshots is making the rounds. Great group of people to work with but perhaps I’m biased 😊

Let us introduce to you, one of our lovely Optometrists: Dr. Meghan Hildebrand!

Dr. Hildebrand works at ArtSEE twice a week and is looking forward to seeing continuing and new patients! You can book online with our website: http://www.artseeeyewear.ca.

Originally from Delta BC, Dr. Meghan Hildebrand completed a Bachelor of
Science degree at UBC. She then embraced the sub-zero winters of Waterloo, Ontario while pursuing her Doctor of Optometry Degree, graduating on the Dean’s Honour List. The days of walking to class in ice rain were rewarded by a four month Ocular Disease internship in Florida, where Dr. Hildebrand gained experience co-managing eye diseases like glaucoma, macular degeneration and dry eye disease. She then moved back to the west coast, and made her home on Vancouver Island where she has learned to embrace the outdoor hobbies of hiking and camping (through some influence of her husband). She is thrilled to be working with the amazing team at ArtSEE, and conducts every eye exam with a smile, which has led to patients sending her their friends and family.

I fully enjoyed working with these two powerful athletes. David (right in the photo of them running) has a vision impairment and runs the 400 meter and Adam (left) is his guide. You can see in the two track photos that they are tethered by their inside hands. They taught me a lot about the 400 meter race but the main thing I took away while squatting on the track and having them whip past me for the shot, is how fast these guys can move, and in perfect tandem. I wish them the best of luck in their quest for the sponsorships that will enable them to compete at top level events.

[05/18/19]   Did you know that if you take a picture of a young child with a flash and their pupil shows up white in the image, this can be a sign of retinal blastoma? The child should be quickly brought to an optometrist as this cancer is very treatable if caught early. This is not to be confused with red eye, which is the reflection of the flash from a healthy retina.

To Stage or Not to Stage in Travel Photography

A lot of amazing photographs come down to this sort of thing. Nothing wrong with making an image rather than taking one - most photographers, myself included, do it frequently - but those made images are fiction of a sort.

petapixel.com With the recent polemics surrounding a certain image that won a photography competition this week, I feel like we need to talk about travel photography.
