⚡bzzt!⚡Good vibes coming your way via Shockwave Therapy!

This machine sends pulses of high energy sound waves to provoke an inflammation response from the treatment site-- think of it like giving the body's healing mechanisms a jump-start🔋It's often used to treat stubborn injuries such as: chronic tendinopathies, plantar fasciitis, rotator cuff disorders, and trigger points.

How's it different from ultrasound? Ultrasound uses continuous low-energy sound waves to stimulate circulation at the treatment site. This helps flush away any inflammation and cell waste products while bringing in the nutrient-rich Good Stuff ™️ to help with healing 💞

Lest we forget 🌹 We take the 11th of November to remember humanity's past, reflect on the present, and re-commit ourselves to growth towards world peace. As the world inevitably continues to evolve, we know one thing is for sure: this must never happen again ♥️

A little flashback Friday to mini Team Focus last week for Halloween 💪💥

10/17/2020

Say hello to our newest physiotherapist, Jenna! 👋 Jenna’s schedule is now available for online booking for Orthopedic Physiotherapy as well as Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy (a new service offered by our clinic! See previous post 👀)
Want to know more about Jenna? Check out her bio and blog post on our website 💛

10/15/2020

Something new this way comes! We have a pelvic floor physio joining Team Focus soon 🤩
.
What the heck is pelvic floor physio even for though? Well actually, folks come to see one for all sorts of reasons: internal pelvic pain, unresolved low back pain, pre/postnatal care, post-op care for pelvic or abdominal surgery, you name it! People are shy about discussing below-the-belt issues but we want to break down this barrier. This is not a problem exclusive to female bodies, nor an uncommon one either. More info in our blog (link in bio👆🏼) for those who are interested, and we will introduce our resident pelvic floor physio very soon 😊

10/02/2020

Welcome, October 🍂🍎 The days are shorter and colder, but we don't mind the change 🤗 Speaking of change, our RMT fees will be increasing effective January 1st, 2021. The 30- and 45-minute appointments will remain the same but 60-minute massages will increase from $110 to $115. Thank you for your continued support! You mean the world to us 🧡

09/14/2020

How is everybody's back-to-school going? 🤓🍎 Team Focus has a few members who also returned to academics this month: former kinesiologist Shea has officially started his journey to becoming a physio, while former administrative support staff Kaitlin is back in school to continue her dream of becoming an acupuncturist! Best of luck to both of you, we miss you already 👋🏼😭

05/27/2020

Whoops! Forgive our technical difficulties-- we forgot how to link our Instagram posts to Facebook 😅 We have an announcement that is better late than never:

We're so happy to be re-opening our doors very soon 💙 We are SO THANKFUL for our province and community for being committed to flattening the curve-- it is this collective effort that created the environment in which we feel good about returning to the work we love! We continue to exercise caution during these times and will be posting our steps and changes that we are implementing to ensure everyone's safety. We look forward to seeing you again! @ Vancouver, British Columbia

Our safety measures can be found here:

03/29/2020

We are announcing an extension in our closure as the world continues to fight against the spread of COVID-19. We miss being with our community, but we pledge to continue to do what is right, rather than what is easy.
.
We thank you for your understanding and your continued support ❤️ Your likes, comments, and direct messages warm the cockles of our hearts!
.
A reminder that our therapists are still available via email! Our owners are also working tirelessly to bring Telehealth to fruition. Please keep an eye out for future announcements!

03/17/2020

To our valued clients,

We are announcing our closure effective March 18th to 31st. We understand the responsibility we have towards our community and we have made this decision to do our part in limiting exposure and minimizing burden on the healthcare system. We will continue to monitor the progress of COVID-19 from the depths of our socially distant caves and keep you updated if anything changes. Until then, keep well and stay safe!

Foam rolling / self muscle release 💪🏼

To roll or not to roll?
Self myofascial release (SMR) is a technique used by athletes, trainers, healthcare practitioners and the general public to deal with muscular tension, soreness & mobility. Research shows the main benefits to arise post activity but some has shown to improve performance testing in the lab.

Often added to a client’s program by our clinicians, SMR can be an effective at home/gym treatment for muscular soreness and mobility.

Spent a glorious August week at Shawnigan Lake recharging the batteries. Back in the city and ready to grind. At least I don’t have to water the garden now 🤣

07/26/2019

We never stop learning! 📚 A very informative Educational Day session ran by our physio, Aaron, on TMJ.

We get a lot of questions asking if we treat TMJ and we most definitely do!

Meet Justin Carpenter! He is one of the three kinesiologists at Focus Physio + Wellness.

Why did you get into Kinesiology?
Kinesiology is something that I was drawn to through sport and fitness. I wanted to gain more knowledge about how the body works and best practices for fitness and rehab.

What do you love about working at Focus?
The best thing about focus is the team atmosphere, everyone is open to discussions about best treatment practices and we all take the time to teach and give back to the local community.

What do you do to stay active and fit?
Staying active is a big part of my families life. We go one walks and hikes frequently, my wife and I make an effort to get to the gym three days a week, and I play on a few recreational teams for enjoyment.

What is one thing people don’t know about you?
Most people don't know that I have had quite a wide range of job experiences, 23 to be exact. For example I made and packaged Fresh is Best chips, separated Diary Land milk shipments, and I was a snowmobile tour guide once.

Meet Aaron Vani! He is one of the physiotherapists and also an owner at Focus Physio + Wellness.

Why did you get into physiotherapy?
I have always been active in sport and athletics and have had my share of injuries (tears, breaks, surgeries, etc). During my undergrad I went through a few knee surgeries and subsequently a LOT of rehab. That crash course in physiotherapy has helped guide me to where I am today.

What do you love about working at Focus?
I love everything about it! The physical clinic, the neighbourhood, our patients and last but not least, our team. All those things make coming into work a joy. It may sound cliche, but it's true!

What do you do to stay active and keep fit?
I am motivated by the saying "practice what you preach". I try and get into the gym a couple times a week and then try and be active outside running, hiking or playing with my two sons (that might be the mostchallenging one!).

What is one thing people don’t know about you?
That I've lived in thirty one different houses/apartments in my life. Twenty three growing up with my family, five in university, and three with my wife. That's a lot of packing and unpacking!

Meet Tyler Carreira! He is one of the registered massage therapists at Focus Physio + Wellness.

Why did you get into massage therapy?
I wanted a job that was more active, I get stir crazy when I sit for too long. I also wanted to work with and be around people.

What do you love about working at Focus?
The people, just go look at all their smiling faces on this site! You wouldn't want to work with them?

What do you do to stay active and keep fit?
I try to get outside as much as possible with hiking or canoeing, but go to the gym if we are having typical Vancouver weather.

What is one thing people don’t know about you?
I always enjoy some good old fashion Karaoke. You should hear my rendition of The Piano Man by Billy Joel.

Meet Catherine Vani! She is one of the physiotherapists and also an owner at Focus Physio + Wellness.

Why did you get into physiotherapy?
During my undergrad degree I saw a physio for what I thought was a heel injury. The therapist worked on my hip and my heel pain went away, which was AMAZING to me. He had such a positive impact on my life and definitely influenced my career choice.

What do you love about working at Focus?
I really enjoy working with the entire team at Focus – I feel lucky to have so many talented practitioners at my fingertips. Also, a Tacofino just opened up down the block, so that’s pretty cool too.

What do you do to stay active and keep fit?
I like to run… I usually run over to my sister-in-law’s so I can visit my new nephew.

What is one thing people don’t know about you?
I actually have very crazy curly hair… I would done very well as a teenager in the 1980s.

03/15/2019

Meet Kelly Wanless! She is one of three kinesiologists at Focus Physio + Wellness.

Why did you get into Kinesiology?
I was drawn to kinesiology when I discovered the impact that movement and exercise has on our overall health. This is an area that has always been important to me and coupled with my fascination of human anatomy and physiology, it was a perfect fit! Kinesiology is a tool that allows an individual to take charge of your health and gives each person power and control over their well-being and I love being apart of that for my clients. It is not just rehabilitative, but preventative and is not limited to physical health, but mental and emotional health as well.

What do you love about working at Focus?
I love the team dynamic at Focus. I feel so lucky to work with a group of incredibly smart, passionate, creative and supportive individuals. Our team embodies collaborative care and I enjoy brainstorming with different practitioners on the best ways to support our clients. We’re also very funny and tell good jokes.

What do you do to stay active and keep fit?
My primary form of exercise is strength training. I also walk a lot and I pretend to like running about 3 times a year. The best part about living in the city is the forced exercise that comes from the convenience of walking most places!

What is one thing people don’t know about you?
I love watching golf on TV and my dream is to go to the Masters one day - as a spectator.

Meet Marina Lagacé!
She is one of our four registered massage therapists at Focus.

Why did you get into massage therapy? I love that my career as a massage therapist inspires me to keep learning and thinking critically, while staying physically active. I got into massage because it allowed me to blend creativity, problem solving and positive human interaction into each diverse and exciting work day. Plus, it feels great to help other people feel great!

What do you love about working at Focus? I love our team and clients at Focus. I am surrounded by positive and thoughtful individuals, and really feel a part of a wellness community. Also, the excessive amounts of cafe/bakeries in the neighbourhood doesn't hurt.

What do you do to stay active and keep fit? I am a commuting cyclist - I even bike my 12 month old daughter to our nanny share two or three times a week! I practice yoga frequently, walk a lot, dance and hike, and work of course! I am a firm believer in finding "exercise" or activities that inspire a person and fit easily into one's lifestyle.

What is one thing people don’t know about you? I grew up on Musical Theatre. Lived and breathed it. Even got my BFA in acting, which is how I first started learning about the body.

Focus Physio Run Series - RunningWorks - https://mailchi.mp/ef5fbadbb704/focus-physio-run-series-runningworks
Hey everyone! Over the last few months we have been working on a new running series that we would like to introduce to you. The running series is going to start off with three FREE talks given by Derek Lai, PT. Also being rolled out is a new running analysis assessment and subsequent treatments aimed to get people stronger and with more confidence and enjoyment.

02/23/2019

Meet Derek Lai!
He is a physiotherapist at Focus. Born and raised Vancouverite who did his physio schooling in Australia.

Why did you get into physiotherapy?
I decided to get into physiotherapy because I loved the teaching relationship between patient and therapist and the constant learning that the profession offers. Ultimately, physiotherapy is problem solving and figuring out different pieces of the puzzle to a problem, and I love puzzles!

What do you love about working at Focus?
I love how we're all eager to learn, not stagnant, and are very supportive of ideas to make the clinic better.

What do you do to stay active and keep fit?
I've resorted to mainly running now. There is something beautiful about being able to put on a pair of shoes, explore whichever alley and street you want and be able to make it both a physical and mental challenge everyday. Outside of running, I enjoy backcountry camping, the longer the day in the mountain the better. I'm hoping to get into climbing a bit!

What is one thing people don't know about you?
Oh no, there's too much. I've been to Timbuktu, which is pretty rare. I also eat peanut butter straight out of the jar.
