Friendlier, a local startup tackling Canadaâs single-use plastic problem head-on, recently closed a $4.5 million dollar funding round. The company, founded in 2019 by University of Waterloo alumni Jacqueline Hanton (BASc â20) and Kayli Smith (BASc â20), has raised a total of $10 million and kept almost 3.7 million food and beverage containers out of landfills.
With operations at more than 200 locations in Ontario, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Manitoba and Quebec, Friendlier is swiftly building a national presence. The latest funding will expand business operations across more of the country with investments in new technologies, infrastructure and logistics â helping Canadians reduce their plastic waste even further by making reuseable choices easier and more accessible.
âCanada is one of the leaders in the circular economy space globally. People are looking at Canada to see what is being done,â Hanton says. âAt Friendlier, we are pushing the needle, making reuse the norm.â

Our containers are made to be circular.
But itâs the reuse that makes it all work. Every time you return a Friendlier container, youâre helping keep packaging in circulation and waste out of landfills.
This Circular Economy Month, weâre celebrating all the small, everyday actions that make a big impact â like choosing reuse over single use.
Together, weâre building a system thatâs better for people, business, and the planet đđ

October is Circular Economy Month!
Itâs a month dedicated to rethinking how we use resources â moving away from the âtake, make, tossâ system and toward a world where products and materials stay in use, again and again.
At Friendlier, thatâs our mission every day: keeping packaging in circulation through reuse, reducing waste, and building a system thatâs better for both people and the planet. Every Friendlier product you return is part of that mission đđ
And since today is also International Coffee Day âď¸ why not celebrate with your favourite brew in a Friendlier cup? Coffee tastes better when itâs waste-free.

When collaboration meets commitment, real change happens.
With over 1.3 million guests every year, the Toronto Zoo knows sustainability has to work at scale. Thatâs why they teamed up with Friendlier, Compass Group Canada, and Coca-Cola to expand the Zooâs reuse program, making it easier to reduce waste while enjoying a day at the Zoo.
Friendlierâs turnkey reuse system, combined with expert change management, helped make the switch a smooth experience for Zoo staff. Levy Canada brought it all to life onsite, while Coca-Cola assisted with key implementation steps so the Zoo could take the next step toward zero waste.
This is what happens when sustainability is built into the system. Reuse becomes possible, scalable, and more impactful than ever.
